What Trump said about magnets and tariffs
Trump made the comments during a White House exchange with reporters before a meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung. Discussing China’s supply of magnets, he said: “They have to give us magnets. If they don’t give us magnets, then we have to charge them 200-percent tariff or something, you know?”
He also described tariffs as a way to halt trade: “If we want to put 100-percent, 200-percent tariffs on, we wouldn’t do any business with China.” The phrase “or something” qualified the 200-percent figure; his remarks did not set out a formal tariff order, an effective date, or a defined policy.
What “destroy China” referred to
Later in the same exchange, Trump said: “They have some cards. We have incredible cards, but I don’t want to play those cards. That would—if I played those cards, that would destroy China. I’m not going to play those cards.”

The transcript places the statement after discussion of tariffs and other trade leverage, but it does not say that “those cards” meant tariffs alone or specify any particular measure. The line is best understood as a broad warning about leverage Trump said he would not use, rather than a detailed policy announcement.
What the remarks establish—and what they do not
- They establish what Trump said: the White House transcript records a conditional reference to a 200-percent tariff tied to magnets and a separate warning about unspecified leverage.
- They do not establish that the tariff was imposed: a spoken possibility is not evidence of an enacted tariff. The remarks provide no implementation details.
- They do not establish current tariff status: these August 2025 comments alone cannot show what tariff rules apply now. Anyone making a business or purchasing decision should consult current official U.S. tariff information rather than rely on the exchange.
Magnets, Boeing parts and other claims in the exchange
Trump also portrayed magnets as an area of Chinese leverage and Boeing airplane parts as possible U.S. counter-leverage. He said 200 Chinese aircraft could not fly because parts had been withheld and that he had sent the parts. Those aircraft and shipment details are claims made by Trump in the exchange; the transcript does not independently verify them. The same caution applies to the broader supply-chain characterization.
