What Trump Said About Imprisoning Mark Zuckerberg

Yes. In a passage from his 2024 book Save America, Donald Trump said Mark Zuckerberg would spend the rest of his life in prison if he did anything illegal in the 2024 presidential election. The statement was a conditional threat, not evidence that Zuckerberg was charged with or found guilty of a crime.

What did Trump say about Mark Zuckerberg?

Trump’s book included this statement, quoted by Sky News on August 30, 2024: “We are watching him closely, and if he does anything illegal this time he will spend the rest of his life in prison – as will others who cheat in the 2024 Presidential Election.”

The wording makes the threat conditional on illegal conduct. It does not establish that Zuckerberg did anything illegal, that authorities investigated or charged him, or that a court found him guilty.

Why did Trump bring up Zuckerberg?

The passage referred to 2020 donations by Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan Zuckerberg, to local election offices. Sky News reported that the donations totaled more than $400 million and helped election offices during the coronavirus pandemic; it also said the grants mostly went to Democratic-leaning counties in some states.

Trump’s book accused Zuckerberg of plotting to install “Lock Boxes” and suggested he had acted against Trump. Those are Trump’s allegations, not verified findings. The Associated Press later described the donations as part of a false narrative that the 2020 election was rigged against Trump, noting there was no evidence of widespread fraud or problems that would have changed the result: AP’s account of the claims and evidence.

How the book threat compared with Trump’s earlier warning

The book passage followed a July 2024 Truth Social post. Fast Company reported that Trump warned election fraudsters would face long prison terms and named Zuckerberg, calling him “ZUCKERBUCKS.” The August book passage was more specific: it threatened life imprisonment if Zuckerberg did anything illegal.

Date and medium What Trump said How specific it was
July 2024, Truth Social Trump said election fraudsters would be pursued and sent to prison for long periods, and named Zuckerberg. A general warning about prison terms.
Reported August 29–30, 2024, in Save America Trump said Zuckerberg would spend the rest of his life in prison if he did anything illegal in the 2024 election. A conditional threat of life imprisonment.

Mediaite’s August 29 report reproduced more of the book passage, including Trump’s claims that Zuckerberg had praised him privately but steered Facebook against him. The report attributes those assertions to Trump; it does not independently substantiate them.

What this has to do with Facebook’s suspension of Trump

Facebook’s restrictions on Trump’s accounts after the January 6, 2021 Capitol attack were a separate platform-policy matter, not a criminal case against Zuckerberg. The platform’s Oversight Board reviewed the suspension and objected to its indefinite, open-ended nature, while upholding a restriction and requiring a proportionate, time-bound response.

Meta said it imposed a two-year suspension beginning January 7, 2021, and later reinstated Trump’s accounts with additional guardrails. Meta’s January 2023 explanation said U.S. presidential candidates remained subject to the same Community Standards. The Oversight Board decision describes Facebook’s reasoning, including its view that Trump’s posts praised people involved in violence and that further violence remained a risk.

What the reports establish—and what they do not

  • Established: In late August 2024, news outlets reported that Trump’s forthcoming book Save America contained the conditional imprisonment threat. Sky News said the book was scheduled for release on September 3, 2024.
  • Not established by the threat: That Zuckerberg committed a crime, was charged, or was convicted.
  • Important context: The donations to election offices were real, but they do not prove election fraud. The claims in Trump’s book should not be confused with court findings or independently verified wrongdoing.

Separately, Mediaite noted that Zuckerberg had written to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan that Meta should not have demoted a New York Post story about Hunter Biden’s laptop in October 2020 while awaiting fact-checkers. That was Zuckerberg’s retrospective statement about a moderation decision, not proof that Zuckerberg interfered with an election.
