Trump’s Coca-Cola Cane-Sugar Claim: What the Company Actually Announced

Trump’s claim was not confirmed in Coca-Cola’s first response. The company later announced plans for an additional U.S. cane-sugar offering, not a stated switch across its entire Coke lineup.

President Donald Trump said on July 15, 2025, that Coca-Cola had agreed to use “REAL Cane Sugar” in Coke sold in the United States. Coca-Cola did not confirm that agreement in its initial response the next day. On July 22, the company announced plans for a U.S. cane-sugar offering for that fall—but described it as an addition to its range, not a switch across all U.S. Coke products. The distinction matters: a different sweetener source is not, by itself, a sugar-reduction or health improvement.

What happened between Trump and Coca-Cola?

The announcement unfolded in three separate steps:

  1. July 15, 2025: Trump said he had been speaking with Coca-Cola and that the company had agreed to use “REAL Cane Sugar” in Coke in the United States. That was Trump’s claim, not a company confirmation. Ars Technica reported the statement.

  2. July 16: Coca-Cola responded, “We appreciate President Trump’s enthusiasm for our iconic Coca-Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca-Cola product range will be shared soon.” The statement did not confirm a broad change in the sweetener used for U.S. Coke. Coca-Cola’s statement.

  3. July 22: In an earnings-release announcement, Coca-Cola said it planned to launch an offering made with U.S. cane sugar that fall. It said the product would expand and complement its Trademark Coca-Cola range and give consumers more choice. Read the company announcement.

So the short answer to “Did Coca-Cola agree to switch to cane sugar?” is: the company’s July 16 response did not confirm Trump’s description of an agreement, and its later announcement was for an additional U.S. offering—not a stated plan to replace the sweetener across its entire U.S. lineup.

Does cane sugar make Coke healthier?

The sources behind the announcement do not establish a health benefit from changing the sweetener’s source. Coca-Cola’s July 22 announcement presented the cane-sugar product as more choice, not as a sugar-reduction initiative. Its current ingredient FAQ lists 39 grams of sugar and 140 calories in a 12-ounce Coca-Cola. Those are company-published figures; the sweetener and formulation can vary by product and market. See Coca-Cola’s ingredient FAQ.

Ars Technica reported that Coca-Cola defended high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) as a corn-derived sweetener with about the same calories per serving as table sugar and a similar metabolism. The report also quoted Marion Nestle, professor emeritus at New York University, calling the focus on cane sugar “nutritionally hilarious” and saying it “doesn’t make any difference.” These are attributed comments, not a substitute for a comprehensive review of clinical evidence comparing health outcomes.

The practical distinction is narrower: cane sugar is sucrose from cane; HFCS is derived from corn. The ingredient’s origin, the amount of sugar on a particular product’s label, and a person’s overall consumption of sugar-sweetened drinks are separate questions. The material available for this announcement does not show that one sweetener produces better health outcomes than the other.

How much sugar is in a serving of Coca-Cola?

Coca-Cola’s ingredient FAQ, accessed October 8, 2026, lists these sugar amounts for the stated serving sizes. The figures are published by the company and should not be assumed to apply to every formulation or market.

Serving size Sugar listed by Coca-Cola Calories listed by Coca-Cola
7.5 oz 25 g not stated (Coca-Cola ingredient FAQ)
8 oz 26 g not stated (Coca-Cola ingredient FAQ)
8.5 oz 28 g not stated (Coca-Cola ingredient FAQ)
12 oz 39 g 140
16 oz 52 g not stated (Coca-Cola ingredient FAQ)
20 oz 65 g not stated (Coca-Cola ingredient FAQ)

The FAQ figures make serving size central to the comparison: a claim about the sweetener alone does not tell you how much sugar is in the drink you buy. For a specific product, check its package nutrition label and ingredient list.

How does Coca-Cola describe its sweeteners?

Coca-Cola says it uses HFCS or cane sugar depending on geography. Its 2026 annual report identifies HFCS as its principal nutritive sweetener in the United States and sucrose (table sugar) as its principal nutritive sweetener outside the United States. The report also identifies consumer concerns about sweeteners, calories, and processed ingredients as business considerations. Coca-Cola’s 2026 annual report.

That company-wide description helps explain why the proposed U.S. cane-sugar offering was framed as an addition. It does not establish that every product, package, or market uses the same formulation. Ingredient and nutrition labels are the relevant source for an individual drink.
