Rep. Don Bacon praised some themes but criticized tariffs, and Sen. John Boozman voiced support for the administration’s agenda. Agriculture itself was not mentioned directly, according to Successful Farming’s February 26 report.
Why reactions from farm country differed
The responses were shaped less by a single agricultural announcement than by what different speakers saw in the address: a signal about access to farm labor, a missed chance to recognize farmers, a case for year-round E15, or a broader political agenda whose tariff policy drew objections. The organizations and lawmakers quoted in the coverage spoke from distinct advocacy and political roles; their statements describe their views, not independent findings about policy outcomes.
What agricultural groups and lawmakers said
NCAE welcomed the emphasis on farm labor
John Hollay, president and CEO of the National Council of Agricultural Employers (NCAE), said the address showed a commitment to a legal, reliable workforce for food production. He urged Congress to act on farm-worker access. NCAE represents employers and others involved in labor-intensive agricultural production, and says its work focuses exclusively on agricultural labor from the employer perspective. In its February 24, 2026, response, Hollay said: “President Trump’s State of the Union once again demonstrated his personal commitment to overcoming our challenge of accessing a legal, reliable workforce to continue producing food right here in America,” NCAE’s release provides the organization’s contemporaneous statement.
Rural Voices USA criticized the omission of farmers
Chris Gibbs, board chairman of Rural Voices USA, argued that farmers facing a deepening crisis were overlooked because the president did not mention them. Gibbs also advocated for passing year-round E15 as a way to support rural priorities. Those are his advocacy positions; the cited coverage does not independently establish the scale of the crisis or the effects of an E15 policy. Gibbs put his appeal this way: “Farmers don’t care about party labels. They care about results,”

Bacon supported some themes but objected to tariffs
Rep. Don Bacon, a Republican from Nebraska and member of the House Agriculture Committee, praised several points in the address but criticized Trump’s tariff approach. Bacon described broad-based tariffs as a tax on consumers, manufacturers, and farmers. He also said they were unpopular nationwide “by roughly 2-to-1.” That figure is Bacon’s quoted claim; the report does not identify the underlying poll, so it should not be read here as an independently verified polling result.
Bacon’s quoted assessment was: “Broad-based tariffs are also not smart economic policy, functioning as a tax on American consumers, manufacturers, and farmers, and are unpopular nationwide by roughly 2-to-1.”

Boozman offered a favorable response
Sen. John Boozman, chairman of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry Committee, praised the Republican agenda and credited the administration’s leadership with securing investment for families who feed, fuel, and clothe the world. He said: “The Republican agenda is helping Arkansans keep more of their hard-earned paychecks while bolstering national security and protecting communities from dangerous threats including crime and drugs,”

The reactions were not a farm-country consensus. NCAE emphasized workforce access; Gibbs emphasized recognition of farmers and energy policy; Bacon paired praise with a tariff critique; and Boozman supported the administration’s agenda. Each comment reflects its speaker’s institutional or political perspective. The White House also published a collection of supportive responses to the address, but that is an administration-curated set of comments, not a representative survey of farm-country opinion: the White House’s collected reactions.
