Trump-affiliated political committees spent roughly $50 million on legal-related expenses in 2023, according to campaign-finance reporting published in early 2024. CBS News put the combined total for Save America PAC and MAGA PAC at more than $49.6 million, counting attorneys, legal consulting, and investigation-related fees. The figure is an attributed news-media aggregation, not a single official FEC total.
What does “last year” mean?
In the original early-2024 reporting, “last year” means calendar year 2023. The headline’s shorthand should not be read as referring to the year before the date you happen to read it.
How much did the committees spend?
News reports cited different totals because they did not all use the same period or expense definition:
| Reported amount | Period and description | Source |
|---|---|---|
| More than $49.6 million | Calendar year 2023; Save America PAC and MAGA PAC spending on attorneys, legal consulting, and investigation-related fees, as reported by CBS News. | CBS News |
| More than $55 million | Calendar year 2023; The Washington Post’s report described the spending as legal fees. Its accounting is not directly reconciled with CBS’s broader category from the available reporting. | The Washington Post |
| $76 million | Two years; AP reported this amount paid to attorneys, a longer period than the 2023 figures above. | Associated Press |
These amounts should not be added together or treated as competing measurements of an identical set of transactions. To compare them, check the dates covered, committees included, and whether “legal” means attorney fees alone or also consulting, investigations, and other legal-related work. The reporting does not establish that every dollar in the roughly $50 million figure paid for Trump’s personal defense; the reported categories are broader and can include services such as expert-witness work.

Where did the money come from, and what does the figure show?
The spending was reported by political committees that raise and spend funds from donors. The FEC’s campaign-finance disclosures record committee disbursements, including reported recipients and purposes. The headline figure by itself does not establish that any spending was unlawful, nor does it identify the beneficiary or purpose of every payment.

- Open the FEC campaign-finance data portal and search for the relevant committee filings, including Save America PAC and MAGA PAC.
- Select reports covering calendar year 2023, then review itemized disbursements for dates, recipients, and reported purposes.
- Compare the records with the specific definition used by a news report. A purpose label or recipient alone may not establish exactly who benefited from a payment or what legal matter it concerned.
The FEC also provides committee lookup and filing data. For a precise transaction-level subtotal, the itemized reports must be reviewed directly; the published figures above are news organizations’ aggregations based on campaign-finance filings.
