What Trump’s May 2025 Remarks Said About Elon Musk’s White House Future

On May 30, 2025, President Donald Trump praised Elon Musk at a White House sendoff and said, “And they’re going to be with us, and you’re going to see the results coming long into the future.” The remark pointed to continued work or results—not a confirmed future White House job for Musk. A later Government Accountability Office report says Musk left his senior adviser position in May 2025.

What Trump said about Musk’s future

Trump made the remarks during an Oval Office news conference with Musk on May 30, 2025. The Office of the Federal Register’s transcript records the event as “The President’s News Conference With White House Senior Adviser Elon R. Musk.” The White House described Musk as a “departing DOGE adviser.”

Trump’s sentence referred to a team and work discussed in the remarks. It was future-oriented, but it did not announce a new appointment, specify a continuing government position for Musk, or promise that Musk personally would remain in the White House. Read the official May 30 transcript for the full context.

Did Musk remain in the White House?

No. The GAO’s later report, DOGE: Information on Personnel and Ethics Activities (GAO-26-108403), says Musk held a White House Office senior adviser position and “separated from his position in May 2025, according to the White House.” The report establishes the separation from that position; Trump’s May 30 remarks do not establish a later appointment.

How the remarks fit the timeline

  • March 11, 2025: At a Tesla viewing and exchange with reporters, Trump praised Musk and said he intended to buy a Tesla. The American Presidency Project transcript records the remarks. They show a public association, not a government personnel decision.
  • May 30, 2025: Trump praised Musk at the Oval Office news conference and spoke about future results. The White House gallery identifies Musk as a departing adviser.
  • May 2025: Musk separated from his senior adviser position, according to the later GAO report.

Why “signals a future” is not the same as an appointment

Trump’s words can reasonably be read as signaling that he expected the work or its results to continue. They do not, on their own, establish that Musk would continue in a formal role. A public expression of praise or support and an official personnel action are different things; the transcript documents the former, while the GAO report gives the separation information.
