Its sharpest claim—that Musk was acting “as if he’s a co-president”—came from an unnamed person familiar with the matter, not an on-record finding or a confirmed consensus among Trump’s team.
What did the report actually say?
In a story by Ashley Bardhan published by Futurism and reproduced by Yahoo, the account of private reactions was attributed to NBC News reporting. The unnamed source, described as familiar with the matter, said: “He’s behaving as if he’s a co-president and making sure everyone knows it.” The wording describes that source’s perception; it does not establish that Musk held a formal role equivalent to the president.
The same source was quoted as saying, “He’s sure taking lots of credit for the president’s victory,” and, “He’s trying to make President Trump feel indebted to him. And the president is indebted to no one.” Those are attributed characterizations of private motives, not independently verified facts.

What public event was the context?
The report appeared after Trump announced that Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would lead the proposed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. That announcement is public context for why Musk’s role was prominent in transition coverage; it does not confirm the source’s description of how others privately viewed him.
The announcement concerned leadership of the proposed DOGE initiative, not a formal cabinet position for Musk. The White House homepage currently lists DOGE among administration priorities, but that present-day official framing does not verify the anonymous account of private reactions in the 2024 story. How firmly is the claim established?
- Reported: NBC News, as relayed in the accessible reproduction, attributed the “co-president” characterization and other comments to one unnamed person familiar with the matter.
- Public context: Trump announced Musk and Ramaswamy as DOGE leaders.
- Not established by the accessible account: that Trump’s team as a whole was fed up, that Musk formally held a co-presidential role, or that the source’s claims about motives were confirmed on the record.
The original NBC News page, any correction, and subsequent on-record responses could not be checked for this account. That means the available material does not settle whether further confirmation or clarification exists; it would be inaccurate to claim that none does.

This was a report about the transition in November 2024, published on November 13. It is not evidence by itself of the working relationship between Trump and Musk today, or of any present-day disagreement. The headline’s “getting fed up” language summarizes reported private unease; it should not be read as a verified finding about the whole team.
