On July 16, 2025, President Donald Trump said he did not have a plan to fire Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, but his denial was qualified: he said removal was “highly unlikely” and did not rule it out, mentioning fraud as an exception. The remarks came a day after reports that Trump had discussed firing Powell with House Republicans.
What Trump said about firing Powell
Trump’s July 16 statement was not an unconditional promise to keep Powell in office. Forbes quoted him telling reporters: “I don’t rule out anything, but I think it’s highly unlikely, unless he has to leave for fraud.” The qualification matters: Trump described firing Powell as unlikely, while leaving the possibility open.
The comment followed reports of a private discussion the previous day. According to the Associated Press, Trump discussed the possibility of firing Powell at a July 15 White House meeting with House Republicans connected to cryptocurrency legislation. AP reported that Trump confirmed discussing the idea and said nearly all lawmakers present supported firing Powell. How the July remarks differed from Trump’s April denial
Trump had used firmer language less than three months earlier. In official remarks on April 22, 2025, he said, “I have no intention of firing him.” Asked again whether he had plans, he answered, “None whatsoever. Why the dispute mattered to borrowers and markets
Trump had repeatedly criticized Powell for not lowering interest rates as quickly or as far as Trump wanted. The disagreement put the independence of the Federal Reserve—the institution responsible for setting U.S. monetary policy—at the center of a political dispute.
Reuters reported that investors and currency analysts were watching the possibility of Powell’s removal because of potential effects on confidence in the dollar and perceptions of Fed independence. What later reporting says about the Powell probe
In an October 2, 2026 report, Axios said the Justice Department would not reopen the Powell probe after Attorney General Todd Blanche reviewed the matter at Trump’s request. That report addresses the probe narrowly; it does not establish the complete current status of every legal or investigative matter related to Powell. Axios.
