President Donald Trump granted Ross William Ulbricht a full and unconditional pardon on January 21, 2025. The action pardoned Ulbricht for his federal convictions; it was not a court ruling overturning the jury’s verdict. Ulbricht had been convicted on seven counts in connection with Silk Road, an online marketplace used to sell illegal drugs and other unlawful goods and services, and sentenced to life in prison in 2015.
What Trump’s pardon did
The official warrant states that Trump granted Ulbricht “A FULL AND UNCONDITIONAL PARDON” under the president’s clemency authority in Article II, Section 2, Clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution. The Justice Department’s clemency listing dates the grant to January 21, 2025. DOJ’s clemency listing and the pardon warrant identify the action as a pardon for Ulbricht’s convictions.
A pardon is distinct from a court reversing a conviction. The official documents reviewed record a presidential pardon; they do not say that a court overturned the jury’s verdict. The conviction and sentence are part of the case history, while the pardon is the subsequent act of executive clemency.
What Ross Ulbricht was convicted of
In February 2015, a jury found Ulbricht guilty on all seven counts after a four-week trial, according to the Justice Department. DOJ’s clemency record lists the offense categories as aiding and abetting distribution of drugs over the internet, continuing criminal enterprise, computer hacking conspiracy, fraud involving identification documents, and money-laundering conspiracy. The department’s sentencing announcement describes its account of the case.

Those offense categories, rather than the mere use of cryptocurrency, explain the convictions in the official record. A DOJ filing in 2022 discussed Silk Road’s Bitcoin-based payment system in connection with forfeiture; it did not identify Bitcoin itself as the offense. The filing and forfeiture context should not be confused with the crimes of conviction.
What Silk Road was
The Justice Department says Ulbricht created Silk Road in January 2011 and owned and operated it until law enforcement shut it down in October 2013. DOJ described the site as a hidden website designed to let users buy and sell illegal drugs and other unlawful goods and services anonymously.
The department’s 2015 sentencing release said Silk Road had been used by more than 100,000 users and described more than $200 million in illegal drugs and other unlawful goods and services. These are figures from the government’s account of its case, not independent measurements. The same release quoted then-U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara saying, “Ulbricht went from hiding his cybercrime identity to becoming the face of cybercrime and as today’s sentence proves, no one is above the law.” That was the prosecutor’s statement at sentencing, not a quotation from the judge. DOJ’s release gives the department’s description.

Why the pardon drew attention
The decision brought together a severe federal sentence, a prominent online drug marketplace, and years of political advocacy. AP reported that Libertarian activists had long argued investigators overreached in the case. That is their criticism, not a court finding. Trump said he had spoken with Ulbricht’s mother and had promised to help him at the Libertarian Party National Convention in May 2024.
Libertarian National Committee Chair Angela McArdle called Ulbricht “a libertarian political prisoner for more than a decade,” and said, “I’m proud to say that saving his life has been one of our top priorities and that has finally paid off.” Those statements express her political view and the group’s advocacy; they are not neutral legal conclusions. AP reported the comments on January 22, 2025.

The pardon warrant and DOJ clemency listing establish the date of the pardon, January 21, 2025, but do not independently establish when Ulbricht was released from prison. The pardon date should not be treated as a verified release date without a separate current prison or government record.
