Why Trump’s campaign asked supporters for money

Reuters reported that the appeal sought contributions from one million supporters and warned that Trump could lose properties. The fundraising appeal came amid a bond problem, but it did not itself satisfy the legal requirement to secure bond coverage. Reuters described the committee as allocating receipts to the campaign and a separate political committee that had been paying Trump’s legal bills. That account does not establish that the fundraising proceeds were used to obtain the fraud-case bond.
What bond had his lawyers failed to secure?
The original bond sought was approximately $454 million, the rounded figure used in Reuters’ contemporaneous reporting for the judgment and bond amount. Trump’s lawyers told the court that 30 surety companies had rejected their effort to secure the full bond, according to Reuters. The Washington Post reported the lawyers’ claim that companies would not accept real estate collateral and quoted counsel describing “insurmountable difficulties” in obtaining the full amount. How the appellate court changed the amount
On March 25, 2024, a New York appellate court agreed to pause collection if Trump posted $175 million within 10 days. The order left the underlying judgment in place while the appeal proceeded; it changed the bond amount needed to pause collection, not the judgment itself. (Associated Press.)

Did the fundraising pay for the bond?
The cited reporting does not establish that donations from the March appeal paid for the $175 million bond. Reuters’ description of how the fundraising committee allocated receipts is not evidence that those proceeds were used for the bond, and the Associated Press report of the bond filing does not connect it to campaign donations. The supported account is that fundraising and securing the bond were separate events; a direct payment link should not be inferred.
