At an August 2024 rally in Atlanta, Donald Trump said, “I’m for electric cars. I have to be because Elon endorsed me very strongly.” The remark tied his stated support for electric cars to Elon Musk’s endorsement—but it did not mean Trump supported requiring everyone to own an EV. His comments immediately before and after the rally make that distinction clear.
What Trump said in Atlanta
At the Atlanta rally, Trump’s phrasing was unusually direct: “I’m for electric cars. I have to be because Elon endorsed me very strongly,” the Associated Press reported. The comment came after Musk had endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. AP’s account describes Trump as having begun to suggest EVs could work for some buyers after that endorsement, despite earlier criticism of electric vehicles’ cost and range. Associated Press
The key qualification is that Trump was expressing support for EVs as an option, not for universal adoption or a government requirement that people buy them.
Why the endorsement did not mean support for an EV mandate
Trump made the consumer-choice distinction explicit in two other appearances in July 2024. At the Bitcoin Conference in Nashville on July 27, he said: “And, you know, I love Elon. He’s great. Four days later, at a National Association of Black Journalists conference, Trump said: “Elon Musk endorsed me and he is a friend of mine, … but I am against everybody having an electric car,” Reuters reported. Reuters
Those statements place the Atlanta line in context: Trump said he was for electric cars, while objecting to the idea that everyone should have one. His public comments on EVs have varied over time; AP’s retrospective notes both earlier criticism and praise, including a 2020 compliment for an electric truck.

White House Tesla display, March 11, 2025
At a White House Tesla display, Trump praised Tesla’s product and described the company as American-made. He chose a red Tesla Model S, said he intended to pay full price, and said he hoped the purchase would help the company’s stock, according to AP. Musk thanked Trump for his support. Trump said he had signed congressional resolutions disapproving three EPA waivers for California vehicle-emissions programs. In a White House statement, he characterized the action as preventing a nationwide electric-vehicle mandate and said it was “ending the electric vehicle mandate for good.” That is the administration’s description of the action; the statement alone does not establish an independent legal assessment of its consequences.
