Not automatically, and Toyota did not promise that U.S. prices would stay unchanged. In a May 8, 2025 briefing, Toyota said it would not make a knee-jerk price increase in response to short-term tariffs. It also said pricing would take competition and actual customer demand into account. That was a time-bounded statement about the company’s approach—not a freeze on every model’s MSRP, incentive, or dealer price.
What did Toyota say about tariff-related price increases?
At its May 8, 2025 financial-results briefing, Toyota Executive Vice President Yoichi Miyazaki said the company would not simply raise prices as a knee-jerk reaction to short-term tariffs. He added that Toyota believes prices are determined by customers, and said the company would consider competition and actual demand when setting them. That distinction matters: Toyota rejected an automatic, immediate response to short-term tariff costs, but did not rule out future price changes. Its statement is not a binding commitment to keep U.S. prices fixed.
What happened after the initial statement?
March 31, 2025: Toyota said it was monitoring policy
Reuters reported that Toyota planned to maintain its current operations for the time being, work to reduce fixed costs, and monitor U.S. tariff developments. At that point, the company had not expressed an intention to raise U.S. vehicle prices. Reuters’ March 31, 2025 report described that position as a response to the policy situation then, not a lasting price guarantee.

May 8, 2025: Toyota described its pricing approach
At the later briefing, President Koji Sato said tariffs already in effect had been included in that fiscal-year forecast and described adapting operations as conditions changed. Miyazaki’s remarks addressed pricing: competition and real demand would matter, rather than a knee-jerk increase prompted by short-term tariffs. These were statements made in 2025, not a new 2026 announcement.
May 8, 2026: reported financial impact
The Associated Press reported that Toyota attributed about 1.4 trillion yen ($9 billion) in annual operating-income impact to tariff policies. AP also reported that Toyota’s profit for the fiscal year ending March 2026 fell 19% year over year. These are company-wide financial figures; neither is a per-car cost, a U.S. retail-price announcement, or evidence that every Toyota model’s price changed by a particular amount. What does “prices will hold for now” mean for a buyer?
It is a useful shorthand for Toyota’s stated reluctance to make an immediate, reflexive increase because of short-term tariffs. “For now” is essential: the 2025 remarks did not guarantee future MSRPs, manufacturer incentives, or dealer prices. Those can differ from one another and may change independently.
Toyota’s company-level position also cannot tell you what a particular dealership will charge. Before committing, compare the current manufacturer price and incentives for the exact model year and trim with a written, itemized dealer offer.

- MSRP: Check the manufacturer’s current published price for the specific vehicle and model year.
- Incentives: Verify current offers and eligibility for your location and purchase or lease terms.
- Dealer offer: Request the out-the-door amount in writing, with dealer-added products and fees itemized. Ask which items are optional.
Does Toyota’s 2018 Camry tariff estimate apply now?
No. In June 2018, Toyota estimated that a proposed 25% tariff could add $1,800 in costs to a Kentucky-built Camry. That was a historical estimate tied to a specific proposal, not a calculation for current tariffs or a guide to today’s Toyota prices. Toyota’s contemporaneous statement argued that such a tariff would increase vehicle costs; it should be understood as the company’s position in that 2018 debate. Toyota USA’s June 27, 2018 statement gives the original context.
