Virgil van Dijk’s new Liverpool contract could be worth about £41.6 million using the reported maximum weekly pay rate over its two-year term. That is an estimate, not a guaranteed total disclosed by Liverpool: the £400,000-a-week figure was reported by The Guardian as “up to” that amount, with performance-related bonuses included.
How the estimate exceeds £40 million
The Guardian reported that Van Dijk’s two-year extension was worth up to £400,000 per week and included performance-related bonuses. Multiplying that reported upper weekly figure by 104 weeks—the approximate length of two years—gives £41.6 million.
| Input | Figure | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Reported weekly amount | Up to £400,000 | The Guardian’s 2025 report; not a salary figure published by Liverpool. The report says performance-related bonuses are included. Source |
| Reported contract term | Two years | Van Dijk described the extension as another two years; the Premier League and BBC Sport described it as a two-year deal running to summer 2027. Liverpool FC; Premier League; BBC Sport |
| Estimated total at the reported upper rate | £41,600,000 | Arithmetic: £400,000 × 104 weeks. This is an estimate based on the reported upper weekly amount, not a separately reported or officially confirmed contract value. |
Because the weekly figure is qualified as “up to,” the calculation should not be read as proof that Van Dijk is guaranteed £400,000 every week or that Liverpool will pay exactly £41.6 million. Bonus payments may affect what is paid, and the reported terms do not establish the guaranteed total.
What Liverpool has confirmed—and what it has not
Liverpool announced on 17 April 2025 that Van Dijk had signed a new contract extending his time at the club beyond the 2024–25 season. Van Dijk called it “another two years at this club.” The club announcement confirms the extension but does not publish his salary, bonus schedule or total contract value. Liverpool FC’s announcement

The £400,000-a-week figure is therefore a media-reported financial term, while the £41.6 million total is a calculation from that report and the two-year term. Neither is an official Liverpool disclosure of a guaranteed payout.

If asking whether the deal can be described as worth more than £40 million, the answer is yes as an estimate based on the reported upper weekly rate: £41.6 million over approximately 104 weeks. If asking how much Liverpool is contractually guaranteed to pay, the public information cited here does not establish that amount.
