For a close-up of industrial investment and network-building, choose Brass: Birmingham. Acquire is the clearest fit for corporate growth, mergers and stock decisions; CATAN makes resource trading and expansion approachable. These games model selected business decisions and can prompt useful discussion, but available sources do not establish that playing them improves real-world business performance.

Which strategy game best matches the business decisions you want to explore?

Game Business decisions it models Best fit Verified practical details

How each game connects to business tactics

Brass: Birmingham: investment, production and connected markets

Roxley describes the game as a contest among entrepreneurs in the West Midlands during England’s Industrial Revolution, from 1770 to 1870, and classifies it as economic, hand-management and network-building. That setting makes it a natural lens for discussing how investment, production capacity, resources and connections interact. A profile from the Universitat de Barcelona’s StartUB! also frames it through industrial economics, supply chains, resource markets, credit, leverage and investment, and identifies systems thinking, strategic decision-making and resource management as relevant skills. Those are educational interpretations, not measured learning outcomes. Universitat de Barcelona StartUB! profile

Acquire: company growth, mergers and stock choices

Hasbro’s description centers on forming, merging and expanding corporations, alongside decisions to sell, trade or keep stocks. The business parallel is corporate ownership and the timing of equity decisions, simplified into a tabletop game. It can spark conversation about how a merger changes the options available to shareholders, but it should not be treated as a guide to actual securities investing.

CATAN: scarcity, exchange and expansion

CATAN offers a familiar way to discuss allocating scarce resources, negotiating trades and expanding into advantageous positions. Its official rules and FAQ are the right references for claims about specific trading and development-card mechanics; rules can vary by edition, so use the matching version rather than assuming every printed rulebook is identical. That supports using it to discuss infrastructure expansion and network decisions. More detailed claims about its mechanics or current edition should be checked against an up-to-date product listing.

Asmodee Star Wars: Outer Rim - Unfinished Business Expansion - Strategy Game, Adventure Game for Kids & Adults, Ages 14+, 1-4 Players, 3-4 Hour Playtime
  • THIS IS AN EXPANSION TO STAR WARS OUTER RIM: This is not a standalone experience. You will need a copy of the Star Wars Outer Rim base game in order to play with this expansion.
  • TAKE TO THE STARS AND BECOME A LIVING LEGEND: You’ve made a name for yourself in the Outer Rim, but there is still Unfinished Business. Hyperlanes through the Core Worlds hold the promise of untapped opportunities. The market is flush with new merchandise, from valuable cargo to tools of the trade. Just watch your step; the latest crop of bounties is even deadlier, and your rivals are looking to take you down!
  • STRATEGY GAME: The goal of Outer Rim is to be the first player to reach ten fame, but the path to notoriety can be different for every scoundrel. Cross paths with the various factions patrolling the Outer Rim, bring in iconic Star Wars characters dead or alive for bounties, or make a fortune delivering illegal cargo, dodging patrols and encounters across the galaxy.
  • UNFINISHED BUSINESS: This long-awaited expansion is packed with more of everything the game has to offer - characters, ships, gear, bounties, jobs, encounters, dice and more! Two new tiles allow players to cross the galaxy by passing through the Core Worlds, and the new “favors” and “ambitions” change up how the game is played. Fire up your engines—it’s time to get down to business.
  • NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: Star Wars Outer Rim is a strategy board game for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 14 and older. Average playtime is approximately 3 to 4 hours.

How to choose the right game for your goal

  • Choose by business model: pick Acquire for corporations and ownership, Brass: Birmingham for industrial production and networks, CATAN for exchange and expansion, or Power Grid for infrastructure.
  • Choose by decision emphasis: consider whether you want to discuss mergers and stock timing, investment and network placement, negotiation and resource allocation, or infrastructure expansion.
  • Check the logistics that matter: the verified player counts, age guidance and duration are listed above where available. Do not infer missing details from another edition or a different game in the series.
  • Match the game to the purpose: hobby games can give a group a shared setting for discussing strategic trade-offs. If the goal is structured business instruction, consider a product explicitly framed for learning and plan for facilitation rather than relying on gameplay alone.

What these games can—and cannot—show

A game can model a narrow set of choices, such as allocating resources, placing a network, or deciding what to do when companies merge. It leaves out much of the uncertainty, regulation, scale, and human responsibility of real business. The sources describe themes, mechanics and intended learning areas, but do not provide named, dated evidence that playing these titles improves business performance or guarantees transfer to work. Treat them as ways to practice thinking about trade-offs, not substitutes for business education or experience.
