The biggest reported paydays are associated with Mission: Impossible II, War of the Worlds and Top Gun: Maverick, each commonly placed around or above $100 million in total compensation. Those are estimates, not verified salary records: much of the money reportedly came from backend participation, and the exact payouts are private.
How the reported paydays compare
There is no reliable public ledger that establishes a definitive, exact ranking of Cruise’s movie earnings. The figures below are nominal dollars reported by the cited sources; they are not adjusted for inflation. Since the sources do not use one consistent method, the three largest reported totals are best treated as a top tier rather than assigned a precise order.
| Film (release year) | Reported total compensation or estimate | Upfront salary information | What the figure represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mission: Impossible II (2000) | $92 million, according to Edward Jay Epstein’s analysis hosted by NYU Stern circa 2006; later Celebrity Net Worth estimates put the total at about $100 million. | No comparable upfront figure established in the cited accounts. | Epstein describes Cruise’s share as $92 million; later roundups give a rounded estimate. Neither figure is an audited payment record. NYU Stern-hosted analysis; Celebrity Net Worth (2026). |
| War of the Worlds (2005) | About $100 million, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026. | The cited sources describe gross participation but do not establish a clean salary-only amount. | A reported estimate of total compensation, not a confirmed studio payment. Celebrity Net Worth (2026). |
| Top Gun: Maverick (2022) | More than $100 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth in 2026. TheStreet’s 2025 table lists $149 million in estimated profit-sharing; Bustle’s 2022 compilation gives a possible total range of $100 million to $200 million. | About $13 million reported as base salary by TheStreet (2025) and Bustle (2022). | Estimates differ and the final total is private. The profit-sharing figure is a secondary estimate, not a verified payout statement. Celebrity Net Worth (2026); TheStreet (2025); Bustle (June 2, 2022). |
| Mission: Impossible III (2006) | $75 million total with backend, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026. | Not stated in the cited estimate. | A reported estimate, not an official or audited total. Celebrity Net Worth (2026). |
| Mission: Impossible (1996) | $70 million total with backend, estimated by Celebrity Net Worth in 2026. | Not stated in the cited estimate. | A reported estimate, not an official or audited total. Celebrity Net Worth (2026). |
Why salary is not the same as a movie payday
An upfront salary is the amount paid for acting under the reported deal; a total payday can also include backend participation tied to a film’s financial performance or revenue streams. That distinction helps explain how a reported salary of about $13 million for Top Gun: Maverick can appear alongside much larger estimates of total compensation.
The sources do not consistently identify the precise backend basis for every film. Epstein’s account discusses participation in home-video revenue for the original Mission: Impossible and reports Cruise’s share from Mission: Impossible II. Other roundups use totals or profit-sharing estimates without supplying enough contract detail to independently calculate them. A box-office gross is not the same as the amount a participant receives: deal definitions, exhibitor shares, revenue from other channels and accounting terms all matter.

What the leading estimates say
Mission: Impossible II: a detailed estimate and a later round number
Edward Jay Epstein’s analysis, hosted by NYU Stern and published circa 2006, puts Cruise’s share from Mission: Impossible II at $92 million. Later Celebrity Net Worth reporting estimates the payday at about $100 million. The gap is a reason to describe the result as roughly $92 million to $100 million across these accounts—not as a settled exact total.
War of the Worlds: about $100 million, estimated
Celebrity Net Worth’s 2026 retrospective estimates Cruise earned about $100 million for War of the Worlds and describes the deal as involving gross participation. The reviewed accounts do not give a comparable confirmed salary figure, so the estimate should not be presented as an upfront fee.

Top Gun: Maverick: the widest spread of estimates
The reported base salary is about $13 million, while estimates of the additional participation vary substantially. Celebrity Net Worth says the total exceeded $100 million but notes that the exact amount is private. TheStreet’s 2025 estimate lists $149 million in profit-sharing, and Bustle’s 2022 compilation gives a possible $100 million to $200 million overall. These figures describe secondary reporting, not a published settlement or payment statement.

- Check whether the number is salary or total compensation. A headline figure that includes backend is not directly comparable with an upfront fee.
- Look for the source’s method. Epstein’s historical account provides more detail about participation economics than the later roundup estimates, but it is still reporting—not the underlying contract.
- Treat precision cautiously. A rounded estimate, a reported share and a broad possible range are different kinds of evidence.
- Keep years and dollars straight. These are nominal reported amounts tied to films’ release years; no inflation adjustment is applied here.
For the available public estimates, the safest answer is that Mission: Impossible II, War of the Worlds and Top Gun: Maverick form Cruise’s leading reported payday tier. The evidence does not establish which one definitively paid him the most.
