Crypto Recovery Companies: What BCA Can—and Can’t—Do

Crypto tracing may support an investigation, but a private recovery company cannot order a seizure or guarantee a refund. Here’s how to assess BCA and avoid recovery scams.

If cryptocurrency has been stolen, a recovery company may be able to trace transactions or prepare investigative documentation, but it cannot independently order an exchange to return funds. The FBI says, “Private sector recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders to recover cryptocurrency.” Broker Complaint Alert (BCA) describes a simplified route to recovery services in a company-promotional release; that is not independent proof that BCA recovers assets or has a verified success rate.

Can a crypto recovery company get your cryptocurrency back?

Sometimes investigators can develop leads that help an exchange, law enforcement agency, or attorney pursue a case. But tracing a transaction is not the same as freezing or recovering the assets. Whether funds can be returned depends on circumstances such as where they moved, whether an exchange can act under its own process or legal process, and what remedies may be available in the relevant jurisdiction. None of those steps guarantees recovery.

The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) distinguishes private-sector tracing from legal authority: a recovery company cannot issue a seizure order. A private investigator or forensic analyst may produce evidence; an exchange, law-enforcement agency, or court-controlled legal process may be needed for action that the investigator cannot compel.

The scale of reported fraud is substantial, but the figures need to be read narrowly: the FBI’s August 11, 2023 public service announcement said IC3 received reports of more than $2.5 billion in cryptocurrency investment-fraud losses in 2022. That figure covers reported investment fraud losses for that year, not all cryptocurrency theft and not losses from recovery scams.

What does BCA say it does?

Broker Complaint Alert (BCA) is described in a company-promotional GlobeNewswire release as offering a simplified approach to crypto recovery services and helping victims engage providers. That release is promotional material, not an independent assessment. It does not establish that BCA itself traces or recovers cryptocurrency, nor does it verify a recovery rate.

The sources available do not establish BCA’s current legal entity, fee schedule, provider-vetting process, eligibility rules, or outcomes. Treat those as questions to verify directly and independently before sharing sensitive information or paying. A company’s role in connecting a customer with services is also different from the role of the person or firm actually conducting an investigation.

How to evaluate BCA or another recovery provider

Before hiring anyone, get clear answers in writing. California DOJ advises consumers to research services, check references, and be cautious about upfront payment. Its guidance on fees for certain telephone transactions is California-specific and should not be treated as a rule that applies everywhere.

  • Identity and jurisdiction: What is the provider’s full legal name, where is it registered, and which jurisdiction governs the agreement?
  • Who does the work: Is the provider a law firm, a forensic investigator, or a service that refers work to another provider? Ask for the names and verifiable qualifications of the people who will handle the case.
  • Scope and deliverable: What work will be performed, and what will you receive—for example, a tracing report or other documentation? Ask what the provider cannot do, including whether it can compel an exchange or seize assets.
  • Fees and refunds: How much is due, when is it due, what could trigger additional charges, and what are the written refund terms? Be wary of large upfront payments or demands for more money after an initial payment.
  • Relevant experience: Ask which blockchains and exchanges the provider has worked with, and request references you can check independently.
  • Security and access: Ask how your identity documents, wallet information, transaction records, and communications will be protected. Do not disclose a seed phrase or private key as a condition of a tracing service.
  • Institutional claims: Verify any claimed government, law-enforcement, exchange, or legal affiliation using the institution’s official contact channels—not contact details supplied only by the claimant.

Kroll publicly describes blockchain tracing, investigation, and analysis as professional services. That establishes that it offers those capabilities; it does not establish that its services are available to individual retail victims or that it can recover a particular person’s funds.

Warning signs of a recovery scam

The FBI warns that recovery fraudsters may charge an initial fee and then disappear, provide an incomplete or inaccurate tracing report, or demand further fees. It also warns that fraudsters may falsely claim law-enforcement or legal affiliations. A 2025 FBI alert describes fictitious law firms using official-partner impersonation and third-party payment requests.

  • The provider guarantees a return, claims it can issue a seizure order, or says its tracing alone will force an exchange to release funds.
  • You are asked to pay escalating “tax,” “unlocking,” “gas,” tracing, or release fees to access the money. The FBI says additional fees do not produce access to scam funds.
  • The claimant pressures you to act quickly or asks you to pay through an unrelated third party, while claiming an official or legal connection you cannot verify independently.

What to do after losing crypto

  1. Stop sending money and preserve evidence. End contact with the original scammer and do not pay further fees. Save wallet addresses, transaction hashes, exchange receipts, payment records, messages, emails, and websites connected to the original fraud and any recovery approach.
  2. Report both approaches. Report the original fraud and any recovery-fraud attempt to IC3 and local law enforcement. Include transaction details and communications with the purported recovery provider.
  3. Contact any exchange or payment provider involved promptly. Provide the relevant transaction information and ask what steps are available. An exchange’s ability to freeze assets depends on its internal processes or legal process; a report does not ensure a freeze.
  4. Verify government contacts independently. If someone claiming to represent the FBI or another government agency asks you for money, contact the agency through its official route. Law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate crimes.
  5. Check any proposed professional before signing. Confirm identity, jurisdiction, references, scope, fees, and claims independently before hiring a lawyer or investigator.
