There is no evidence-backed universal “most profitable” digital product for 2026. The right format depends on a specific audience, a problem they will pay to solve, and whether you can create, license, deliver, and support the product at a sustainable cost. Courses, templates, printables, creative assets, software, and memberships can all work—but broad market estimates and seasonal search trends do not predict an individual seller’s income.
What counts as a digital product?
A digital product is delivered by download, email, or gated access rather than physical shipping. That covers educational content and practical files, as well as licensed media, software, and subscriptions. The format is only the starting point: a useful offer names its intended buyer, explains what the buyer can do with it, and sets clear access and usage terms.
Digital product ideas to consider
Choose a format that fits the job your audience needs done. These are product categories, not a ranking of likely earnings.
Courses and learning products
A course can teach a defined practical outcome through video, slides, quizzes, or multiple sessions. An ebook or workbook can accompany it. Make the learning promise specific, and plan to update lessons when the subject changes.

Ebooks and practical guides
Guides can package expertise in a convenient form. Before writing one, compare it with free material on the same subject and identify what makes your version more useful to a particular reader.
Printables, planners, and journals
Possible products include coloring pages, wall art, greeting cards, daily or weekly planners, budget trackers, meal-planning sheets, and habit trackers. State whether the file is intended for printing, digital use, or both, and identify the audience it serves.
Templates and reusable tools
Editable Canva layouts for social posts, presentations, and media kits are examples. Other possibilities include web templates and tools aimed at a narrowly defined workflow. Tell buyers what accounts or software they need, and check rights for every included asset.
Licensed creative assets
Stock photography, music, sound effects, Lightroom presets, icons, brushes, fonts, overlays, and digital art can be licensed for specified uses. Explain whether buyers may modify or redistribute the files, whether attribution is required, and which channels or uses are allowed.

Software and technical assets
Downloadable software, code snippets, landing-page templates, ecommerce UI components, and email layouts can help users complete a task faster. Compatibility, security dependencies, updates, and technical support are part of the offer, not afterthoughts.
Memberships and libraries
A subscription or gated library can provide ongoing access to content or assets. It also creates continuing work: members need a reason to stay, and you need to manage access, renewals, updates, and support.

What market-size figures can—and cannot—tell you
Shopify’s June 12, 2026 guide says digital products generated more than $157 billion, attributing the estimate to Mordor Intelligence in 2026. A separate Shopify digital-dropshipping guide gives a $124 billion estimate attributed to Mordor Intelligence in 2025. The cited passages do not give enough methodological detail to reconcile their scopes, so the figures should not be combined or treated as directly comparable. In either case, an overall market estimate does not show what a specific seller or product will earn.
The June 2026 Shopify guide also cites a $501 million NFT market figure for 2026, attributed to Statista, and an e-learning industry projection of $848 billion by 2030, attributed to GlobalNewswire. Those are secondary attributions in Shopify’s article, not proof of demand for an individual offer. Check the original publisher and the scope of an estimate before relying on it.

- Define the buyer and task. Describe who needs the product and the specific outcome or job it supports. “A planner” is broad; a budget tracker for a clearly defined use is more testable.
- Look for current, relevant demand. Inspect search terms and product attributes in the marketplace and geography where you plan to sell. Etsy’s Seller Trend Report: Spring and Summer 2026, written by Katy Svehaug, says its search and sales data runs through February 10, 2026, compares the prior three months with the year-earlier period, and covers U.S. signed-in Etsy user activity. Its themes include home refreshes, weddings and celebrations, hobbies, expressive details, and personalized keepsakes. These are seasonal Etsy signals, not evidence of demand for every digital download or every location.
- Check the alternatives. Compare competing offers and free resources. Identify a useful distinction—such as a better-defined audience, clearer instructions, a different workflow, or a license that fits a buyer’s intended use—rather than assuming a crowded category guarantees sales.
- Confirm rights and delivery. Make sure you own or have permission to use every component, then decide whether customers receive a download, email, software key, hosted course, or gated access. Spell out what happens when a customer needs access again or a product is updated.
- Estimate the economics. Account for platform and payment fees, royalties or licenses, delivery tools, marketing, support, refunds, and chargebacks. Digital delivery can avoid physical inventory and shipping; that does not guarantee a high net profit.
- Match the price model to the work and value. Consider a one-time purchase, bundle, tiered license, or subscription. A recurring charge requires continuing value and access management; a one-time sale may fit a product that does not need ongoing updates.
Where to sell and how to deliver
Shopify’s June 12, 2026 guide describes branded online stores, social storefronts, and niche marketplaces as possible channels. Its digital-dropshipping guide discusses Etsy and Gumroad as options and describes licensing products made by other creators. Digital goods may be delivered by download, email, or access to a platform; a digital-download app is one possible fulfillment method.

Platform features, fees, regional availability, and rules can change. Check the current terms for the channel and delivery method you plan to use, including any marketplace commission, before setting your price.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Rights, licensing, and buyer expectations
If you resell or license another creator’s work, get written terms that cover the product and file formats; territories and sales channels; buyer usage rights; pricing restrictions; royalties and reporting; the agreement term; updates and support; refunds; and copyright complaints. Do not assume that permission to sell a file also grants buyers unlimited rights to use or redistribute it.
For Canva templates, Shopify specifically flags the need to check Canva’s content license, confirm the creator has rights to the template and its assets, and tell buyers whether they need a free or paid Canva account. Apply the same basic discipline to other assets: make permissions, limitations, and technical requirements understandable before purchase.

Make the choice on more than apparent demand
Compare candidate ideas across the factors that shape whether you can make and maintain a useful offer:
- Audience and problem: Is the intended buyer clear, and does the product support a meaningful task or outcome?
- Demand and competition: Is there current evidence in your target marketplace, and can the offer stand apart from free or abundant alternatives?
- Creation and maintenance: Do you have the expertise and time to create it, and how often will it need updates?
- Rights: Can you legally include and license every component, and are permitted uses, territory, attribution, and redistribution clear?
- Delivery and support: Can you reliably handle access, updates, renewals, and customer problems?
- Economics: Do likely revenues leave room for platform costs, licensing, marketing, refunds, and support?
For seasonal marketplace ideas, Etsy recommends using Marketplace Insights to explore rising searches and attributes, then incorporating relevant exact phrases into listings. Its report’s examples include “embroidered bags” and “garden wedding”; those illustrate specific shopper phrasing, but do not establish that either query represents digital-download demand. Recheck marketplace signals before acting, especially when the report is limited by season, geography, or platform.
