Which Hotels Do Billionaires Own? Why a Defensible Top 10 Is Hard to Verify

There is no substantiated current top 10 of billionaire-owned hotels. Brand and management-company stakes do not establish who owns individual properties.

There is no source-backed, current ranking of ten individual hotels owned by billionaires in the available evidence. The key reason is that owning a hotel company or brand is not the same as owning the buildings bearing its name: Four Seasons says it manages properties with separate ownership partners. Historical references to several famous hotels are useful leads, but do not establish who owns them today.

Why there is no reliable current top 10

A ranking of billionaire-owned hotels needs property-level ownership evidence and a clear ranking rule. The available sources do not establish ten hotels’ current owners and billionaire stakes on a comparable basis, nor do they provide a common measure such as the owners’ wealth, each hotel’s value, or the size of the billionaire’s stake. Naming ten famous luxury hotels would not solve that problem: a billionaire’s connection to a hotel brand or operator does not prove ownership of a particular property.

Hotel ownership, management and branding are different

Four Seasons describes itself as a management company that works with ownership partners across its properties. That distinction matters: the company’s ownership and the legal ownership of a hotel building are separate questions. A Four Seasons sign alone cannot establish that Bill Gates or Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal owns that specific property. Four Seasons’ 2022 announcement reported 124 properties and explained the company’s management role.

In that 2022 announcement, Four Seasons reported that Cascade Investment held 71.25% of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, an affiliate of Kingdom Holding Company held 23.75%, and Isadore Sharp’s company held 5%. These were stakes in the management company at the time—not ownership percentages in each hotel property. Four Seasons’ official history says the company returned to private ownership in 2007 through a partnership involving Bill Gates and Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal. That historical company-level event does not identify current owners of individual hotel buildings.

Three historic hotel references are leads, not a current list

A historical account by Kingdom Holding Company named The Plaza in New York, the Savoy in London, and Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris among its hotel real estate interests. The account does not establish the present owner, the company’s stake, or the dates those interests applied to. It therefore cannot support listing any of the three as currently owned by a billionaire.

The distinction is not merely technical. Hotel businesses can involve full ownership, partial ownership, or management arrangements; a 2010 Forbes briefing book records Prince Al-Waleed making those distinctions in discussing his hotel business. Without current, property-specific records, a historical association should not be presented as present ownership.

What a verifiable billionaire-hotel ranking would need

Before comparing candidate hotels, establish each property’s legal owner and the date that ownership was confirmed. Then document whether a billionaire holds a direct or indirect stake, how large that stake is, and whether the relationship is ownership, management, or branding. A ranking also needs one consistent criterion—such as property value or the billionaire’s ownership percentage—and a method for handling shared ownership. Owner wealth alone is not a hotel ranking unless the article explains how it treats indirect and divided stakes.

  • Property: identify the specific hotel building or asset, not just its brand.
  • Owner and date: name the legal owner and provide evidence current to a stated date.
  • Billionaire’s stake: distinguish direct from indirect ownership and report the documented share.
  • Relationship: label property ownership, operating or management responsibility, and brand affiliation accurately.
  • Ranking rule: state the measure used and apply it consistently to all entries.
