The right agile certification depends on the work you want to do: facilitate Scrum, own a product, support developers, lead teams, use Kanban, or work in an organization that has adopted SAFe. This is a curated comparison of 16 options—not an objective ranking. Certification providers describe their own programs, and the available information does not establish that any credential guarantees a job, higher pay, or better performance.

How to choose an agile certification

Start with the responsibilities in your target role and the methods used by the employers you are considering. A Scrum Master credential is not interchangeable with a product-owner credential, and a SAFe credential is most relevant when the organization actually uses SAFe. A broader, framework-agnostic credential may make more sense if your work spans several agile methods.

  • Match the role: Scrum Master, product owner or manager, developer, agile leader, or practitioner working with Kanban.
  • Match the workplace: Check job descriptions and ask employers which framework they use; do not assume a credential is universally preferred.
  • Compare the commitment: Confirm training, exam, eligibility, renewal, continuing education, and any membership requirements directly with the provider.
  • Assess the financial case: Compare the full current cost and time investment against your budget and the role you want. Comparable prices and independent evidence of salary or hiring outcomes are not established here.

The providers describe different certification routes. Scrum Alliance describes structured, instructor-led learning; Scrum.org says its certifications are earned by passing assessments, not simply by attending a class. Neither route by itself demonstrates job performance.

Compare the 16 options by role and framework

The list below groups credentials by the work they are intended to support, not by rank. Program names, eligibility, course rules, exam formats, fees, and renewal policies can change. The details identified as not stated were not established by the provider information reviewed on October 8, 2026; check each provider’s current rules before enrolling.

Which certification is right for you?

If you want to facilitate Scrum teams

Compare CSM with PSM I first. The practical distinction established by the providers is the route: Scrum Alliance describes structured, instructor-led learning and a test, while Scrum.org describes assessment-based certification. If you already work in a SAFe organization, SSM may be more directly aligned with that context. Check its current exam and renewal terms before deciding whether to take a course or pursue the exam route.

If you work in product ownership or product management

Compare CSPO and PSPO I for Scrum product-owner work, and consider the advanced or professional Scrum Alliance credentials only after confirming their current prerequisites. POPM is tailored to a SAFe workplace. ICP-APO focuses on agile product ownership; ICAgile also lists Product Management (ICP-PDM) for readers whose work centers more on product strategy and lifecycle. The available provider information does not establish that one option is more valued by employers.

If you build products on a Scrum team

PSD I is the developer-focused option in this list. It is more role-specific than a Scrum Master or product-owner credential, so choose it when the material maps to your actual development work rather than collecting a credential simply because it contains “agile” in the name.

If you lead teams or work across agile methods

PAL I is aimed at leaders supporting agile teams. PMI-ACP is the broader, experience-based choice in this comparison: PMI describes it as framework-agnostic and applicable across agile methodologies. PMI’s agile page lists a 2+ years experience threshold and points readers to Authorized Training Partner courses and PMI Study Hall; use the current handbook for complete eligibility and exam rules.

If your organization uses SAFe

Choose among SA, SSM, and POPM according to your job: foundational SAFe context, Scrum Master responsibilities, or product ownership/product management. A SAFe credential has the clearest contextual fit when your organization uses that framework. Scaled Agile says the SSM and POPM proctored exams can be purchased without taking their associated courses; course attendance does not guarantee passing the exam.

How to compare cost, time, and renewal

There is no comparable price set established for these 16 credentials, so a single cost ranking would be misleading. Ask providers for the total amount due and the time commitment, not just the headline exam fee.

  • Training: Is an instructor-led course required, optional, or not part of the route? Confirm whether the fee includes the exam or a retake.
  • Assessment: Check whether the credential requires a test, what format it uses, and whether there are deadlines or retake charges.
  • Eligibility: Confirm work experience, prior credentials, or course prerequisites before paying.
  • Renewal: Ask whether the credential expires and whether continuing education, a membership, or a renewal payment is required.
  • Opportunity cost: Include time away from work and preparation in your personal budget calculation. A credential is an investment decision, not a guaranteed return.

Scrum Alliance says its certifications include a two-year membership and describes renewal through certification-specific Scrum Education Units (SEUs) and a renewal fee. Confirm the current rules and fee for the particular credential. Comparable renewal costs and obligations for the other credentials are not stated in the reviewed provider information.

What these certifications can—and cannot—tell you

A credential can signal that you completed a provider’s learning or assessment route. It does not, by itself, establish that you can lead a team effectively or that an employer will pay more for your skills. The provider information reviewed does not establish a universal employer preference, salary premium, pass-rate comparison, or career outcome for any of the 16 options.
