There is no evidence-based universal “best” payment gateway for every Indian business. The right choice depends on your payment mix, pricing quote, settlement terms, integrations and whether you need features such as recurring payments or international collections. The available official information supports comparing five providers—Razorpay, PhonePe Payment Gateway, PayU, Cashfree Payments and CCAvenue—not a verified ranking of ten.
How to choose a payment gateway in India
Compare the terms that will affect your business, not just a headline rate or a provider’s payment-method count. Ask each provider for pricing and eligibility based on your expected transaction volume and payment mix.
- Effective cost: Get the fee for each payment method and clarify whether GST, setup or maintenance fees, refunds, chargebacks, or optional features add costs.
- Payment coverage: Confirm support for the methods your customers use, such as UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, EMI or international payments.
- Business features: Check whether you need hosted checkout, payment links, recurring payments, dynamic QR, fraud controls, reporting or refund tools.
- Integration: Confirm that the gateway works with your commerce platform, or that its APIs, SDKs or no-code options suit your team.
- Settlement: Ask about the standard settlement schedule, eligibility and cost for faster settlement, and any conditions that apply to your merchant profile.
- Regulatory status: Verify the provider’s current authorization status using official Reserve Bank of India records before onboarding.
Provider-reported success rates, business counts and payment-method totals are not independently comparable evidence of which service will perform best for your business.
Five payment gateways to compare

| Provider | Payment methods and features disclosed | Pricing and settlement disclosed | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Razorpay | Cards, UPI, cardless EMI, EMI, net banking, wallets and pay-later methods. Razorpay pricing | Its pricing page advertises a 2% fee and a free first 90 days offer. | Confirm current offer availability, eligibility, applicable fees by method, GST and settlement terms. |
| PhonePe Payment Gateway | UPI, debit and credit cards, net banking; standard checkout, payment links, UPI AutoPay, international payments, dynamic QR and device tokenization. PhonePe Payment Gateway | The page displays a promotional “Free” offer against a struck-through 1.99% standard plan, subject to terms. It says high-volume enterprise pricing is personalized and that pricing figures are accurate as of July 2026. | Confirm the offer’s current conditions and whether your business qualifies; ask for a quote if your volume requires enterprise pricing. |
| PayU | More than 150 payment modes, including cards, UPI, EMI, BNPL, wallets and net banking; plugins, APIs, SDKs and no-code tools. PayU pricing | Its FAQ lists 2% for domestic cards, net banking, wallets and BNPL; 3% for EMI, Amex, Diners and international transactions; GST extra; and standard settlement at T+2. UPI pricing varies by business type and volume. Accelerated settlement may carry a fee. These are PayU’s disclosed terms accessed in 2026; the provider reserves the right to change pricing. | Reconfirm rates and settlement terms for your merchant profile, particularly UPI pricing and any accelerated-settlement fee. |
| Cashfree Payments | UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, EMI and other methods. Its page identifies RBI-authorized Payment Aggregator Certificate of Authorization No. 266/2025 and PPI Certificate No. 209/2024. Cashfree Payments gateway | Comparable current pricing and settlement terms are not stated in the information summarized here. | Request a merchant-specific quote and verify the stated authorization in current RBI records. Treat feature and performance statements as provider claims. |
| CCAvenue | Its registration page describes a PCI-DSS compliant payment-processing platform. CCAvenue | Comparable current pricing and settlement terms are not stated in the information summarized here. | Request a quote and compare method-specific fees and settlement conditions against your expected transaction mix. |
What payment gateway charges should you compare?
A quoted percentage is only one part of the cost. Ask for the fee schedule by payment method and transaction type, then check what GST and optional services add. The disclosed PayU FAQ, for example, says GST is extra and that UPI pricing varies by business type and volume; its stated figures should be reconfirmed because the provider may change pricing.
Promotions also need close reading. PhonePe’s displayed “Free” offer is subject to terms, while Razorpay advertises a free first 90 days. Neither disclosure establishes that every merchant qualifies or that all payment methods and services are free. Request the terms that will apply after any promotional period as well as during it.
Rank #2

- Real-time telemetry: Monitor sales, inventory, and performance remotely
- Marketing tools: Loyalty programs, discounts, and punch cards
How to compare settlement timing
Settlement affects when collected funds reach your business account. PayU’s pricing FAQ states standard settlement at T+2 and says accelerated settlements may carry a fee; that is a provider-disclosed term, not a promise about every merchant or payment. For every provider, get the applicable schedule in writing, including how the schedule is defined, whether faster settlement is available to your business, and its cost or eligibility conditions.
Check authorization before onboarding
The Reserve Bank of India FAQ says: “In terms of Section 4 of the PSS Act, 2007 no person other than the Reserve Bank can operate or commence a payment system unless authorized by the Reserve Bank.” It also says foreign and domestic entities need authorization before commencing payment-system operations in India. See the RBI FAQ on payment systems, and check current RBI records for the provider’s status. A provider’s own statement about authorization is not a substitute for checking the official record.

Which gateway may suit your business?
Use the published feature information to build a shortlist, then decide using the terms offered to your business. A provider with a relevant method or integration is worth checking; that does not establish that it is cheapest or will deliver a higher payment success rate.
- If UPI is central: Compare UPI support and the actual UPI fee offered for your business. PayU says its UPI pricing varies by business type and volume.
- If you need recurring payments or payment links: PhonePe’s page lists UPI AutoPay and payment links. Confirm how the features work for your business and what they cost.
- If you need a broad set of methods or integrations: Compare PayU’s disclosed payment modes and integration options with the methods and tools you actually need. A higher advertised method count alone is not a reason to choose it.
- If a promotional price matters: Compare the offer period and conditions with the ongoing quote, including GST and fees outside the promotion.
- If settlement speed matters: Compare standard and accelerated settlement terms in writing, including fees and eligibility.
- If CCAvenue or Cashfree is on your shortlist: Obtain a current merchant-specific quote and verify the relevant product, settlement and authorization terms before comparing costs.
How to make the final comparison
- Estimate your monthly transaction volume and the share expected through each payment method.
- Ask shortlisted providers for written, method-specific pricing, including GST, setup or maintenance fees, and charges for optional services.
- Confirm payment methods, recurring-payment and international-payment eligibility, refund handling, fraud controls, reporting and supported integrations.
- Get standard and faster-settlement terms that apply to your merchant profile, including timing, fees and eligibility.
- Check current RBI authorization records and review the provider agreement before onboarding.
Because the available provider disclosures do not establish a comparable top-ten ranking or an independent success-rate comparison, treat this list as a shortlist for due diligence—not as a measured league table.
