There is no freelance website that is better for every project. The right alternative depends on whether you want a curated specialist, professional tools for independent creatives, an open bidding process, flexible engagement structures, or a mix of packaged services and proposals. Here are five platforms to compare—and what each is suited to.
How to choose an alternative to Fiverr or Upwork
Think of “better” as a closer fit, not a universal ranking. Before choosing, consider how you want to hire: select a predefined service, compare bids, browse profiles, or be matched with a curated network. Also weigh the work category, location, how much candidate screening you can do, and the contract and payment workflow.
Fees can change and may depend on the contract, payment method, and location. Check the platform’s current terms for both client charges and freelancer fees before agreeing to work; a headline rate from a comparison page is not enough to estimate the total cost.
Five freelance websites to consider
1. Toptal: a curated specialist network
Toptal is worth considering when you need a specialist and prefer a curated network to an open marketplace. Its site lists AI experts, software developers, designers, marketing experts, management consultants, product managers, and project managers. Toptal says applicants are tested and vetted, and describes its network as the “top 3%” of freelance talent. Those are company claims, not independently verified acceptance statistics.

Toptal also states: “Every applicant to the Toptal network is rigorously tested and vetted. Our highly selective process leads to a 98% trial-to-hire success rate.” The 98% figure is Toptal-reported; the page does not state a year, and it should not be read as a guaranteed outcome for an individual hire. See Toptal’s current network and hiring information.
2. Contra: creative work and professional workflow tools
Contra is oriented toward creative work and independent professionals. Its site lists tools and services for project management, verification, job discovery, getting discovered, contracts, and invoices, alongside company hiring and team project tools. That combination may appeal if you want more than a listing page for finding and managing creative work.

3. Freelancer.com: compare proposals through bidding
Freelancer.com serves both clients looking to hire and people seeking freelance jobs. Fiverr’s comparison guide describes the marketplace workflow as clients posting projects and freelancers bidding, with fixed-price and hourly arrangements. That gives clients proposals to compare, but a bidding process does not by itself guarantee a lower final cost or better work. Allow time to assess each bidder’s relevant experience, proposed scope, schedule, and terms.

For the bid-model description, see Fiverr’s comparison of Upwork alternatives; it is a competitor’s guide, not an independent ranking.
4. Guru: flexible engagement and payment structures
Guru may be a fit if you want to compare both job postings and freelancer profiles, then choose among different contract and payment arrangements. Fiverr’s guide also describes a workroom and SafePay as parts of the workflow. These are broad descriptions from a competing platform’s comparison article; confirm the current availability, terms, and protections directly with Guru before relying on a feature or committing funds.
Rank #4
5. PeoplePerHour: packaged services and project proposals
PeoplePerHour is described in Fiverr’s guide as combining “Hourlies,” or packaged services, with proposals for projects. That hybrid can suit someone who wants to buy a defined task in some cases and solicit proposals for custom work in others. The guide characterizes the platform as having strong UK and European representation, but that is not a verified measure of current regional coverage. Check the platform’s current service availability and terms for your location before choosing it.

Protect your budget and working relationship
Platform choice affects more than the quoted project price. Before starting work, make sure you understand the full amount you will pay or receive, including any platform, payment-processing, or contract-related charges that apply. Ask for a written scope, milestones, delivery dates, revision expectations, and a process for handling changes. Keep payment and project communication within the agreed workflow so both sides can refer back to the terms.
Online freelance platforms connect clients and workers, but platform use does not necessarily provide the protections associated with employment. A 2024 report from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation discusses vulnerability to unfair treatment among online freelance workers; it is general context, not a legal conclusion about every worker, platform, or country.
