There is no single set of five international transfer methods that is cheapest for every sender. The best price depends on the sending and receiving countries, amount, exchange rate, funding and payout methods, and timing. Compare the total cost and the amount the recipient will receive for your exact transfer—not just the advertised fee.
What “cheapest” means for an international transfer
A transfer’s cost includes both the stated transaction fee and the margin built into its exchange rate. The World Bank’s methodology notes that speed and other service terms also matter to customers. A provider advertising no fee may still offer a less favorable rate, so compare the final recipient amount for the same send amount and currency pair.
The five options below are practical methods to compare, not a universal ranking. A method that averages cheaply across a dataset may cost more on your route, and it is not useful if the recipient cannot access its payout method.
- Set the exact route: choose the sending country, receiving country, send amount, and currency pair.
- Compare total cost and delivery: review the fee and exchange rate together, and note the amount that will arrive.
- Compare usable combinations: check funding methods available to you and payout methods the recipient can use.
- Check the terms: review delivery time, eligibility, transfer limits, and any intermediary or receiving charges shown.
- Recheck before sending: rates, fees, availability, and speed can change; use a fresh quote when you are ready to confirm.
Five lower-cost methods worth comparing
1. Digital-only money transfer operators
Digital-only money transfer operators (MTOs) are a useful starting point for a price check. In the World Bank’s Q3 2025 data, this provider category averaged 3.54%, while the digital remittances index averaged 4.59%. Those are separate category averages, not quotes for a specific provider or route. Check the actual exchange rate, recipient amount, and delivery terms before deciding.

2. Other international transfer services
Compare other MTOs and services that support your corridor. Providers can differ in fees, exchange rates, funding choices, payout options, and speed. A comparison page can help narrow the options for a particular route: for example, Wise’s US comparison page displays route-specific quotes. Those live quotes are not a general ranking and can change. Wise also says the cheapest option depends on destination and payment method.
3. Mobile-money funding
Where available, mobile money may be worth comparing as a way to fund a transfer. In the World Bank’s Q1 2025 snapshot, mobile money was the least-cost funding method at an average 3.63% across 50 tracked services. That quarter-specific result is not a permanent rule: the Q3 2025 report identified credit or debit card as the lowest-cost originating instrument. Check the current quote and make sure the sender can use the method on the chosen service.

4. Card-funded transfers
Cards can be convenient, but compare the quote with other funding methods rather than assuming they are cheaper or faster overall. The World Bank reported a Q3 2025 average cost of 4.39% for credit or debit card as an originating instrument. In Q1 2025, card funding averaged 4.68% across 2,919 tracked services. These figures describe different quarter-level snapshots and should not be read as a guaranteed card price. Wise says bank transfers are usually its cheapest way to fund a transfer, while card funding can be faster; that is Wise’s description of its own service, not a rule for every provider.
5. Transfers paid out to a debit card
Where the recipient can receive money on a debit card, compare that payout option with bank deposit, mobile wallet, and cash pickup. The World Bank’s Q3 2025 data identified debit card as the lowest-cost receiving instrument, with an average cost of 3.61%. In the Q1 2025 snapshot, debit-card payout averaged 3.44% across 17 services, compared with 5.70% for cash across 3,711 services and 5.10% for mobile wallets across 471 services. These are historical averages across tracked services, not prices guaranteed for your transfer; availability and recipient access also matter.

How World Bank averages can—and cannot—guide you
The World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide Issue 54, published in September 2025, reports a Q3 2025 global average remittance cost of 6.36%, down from 6.49% in Q1 2025. Its Q3 Global SmaRT Average was 3.29%. These are distinct measures, so they should not be substituted for one another or treated as personalized quotes.
Costs also varied by provider type and destination region in Q3 2025. Banks averaged 14.99%, while transfers to Sub-Saharan Africa averaged 8.46% and transfers to MENAAP averaged 5.11%. The report describes Sub-Saharan Africa as the most expensive receiving region in that quarter. These figures show why route and provider category matter; they do not establish which option is cheapest for an individual transfer.
The World Bank says its database covers 367 corridors from 48 sending countries to 105 receiving countries. Its Q3 report overview says it averaged 21.7 services per corridor and tracks banks, money transfer operators, mobile operators, and post offices. Its figures are useful for context, but they are not a live comparison of every service available to every customer. For Russia-origin corridors from Q3 2022 through Q3 2025, the report says only publicly available online data were collected, without mystery shopping or API collection; those services appear in an annex rather than the main analysis.
When the lowest price may not be the best choice
- The payout is inaccessible: a low-cost cash pickup or wallet option does not help if the recipient cannot reach or use it.
- Timing matters: compare delivery estimates alongside price; a lower-cost funding method may take longer.
- The quote has conditions: check eligibility, limits, and any charges shown for intermediaries or receiving institutions.
- The route changes the result: provider coverage and pricing vary by countries, amount, and currency pair.
How to use a provider comparison
Use a comparison tool to check several providers for one specific route and amount, then confirm the terms on the provider’s own quote screen. Wise’s guide to cheaper international transfers says the cheapest choice depends on destination and payment method and describes bank transfer as usually its cheapest funding option. Treat these as Wise’s statements about its service; your own quote determines the amount and terms available to you.

Provider prices, promotional rates, exchange rates, eligible corridors, and delivery speeds are volatile. A live comparison can inform a current transfer, but it cannot prove which provider was cheapest across all routes in 2025.
