The Elite Thinning Shears are not interchangeable with the four cutting shears: thinning shears remove or soften sections of hair rather than serving as a standard cutting blade. How to choose shears for your work
Start with the technique and result
Decide what you need the tool to do most often: precise detail or perimeter work, general wet- or dry-hair cutting, shear-over-comb barbering, or texturizing and blending. Blade length and tooth design should match that work. Use length guidance as a starting point
Above Shears’ 2025 buying guide describes 5.5–6.0-inch shears as a common range for precision and control, and 6.5–7.0-inch shears as useful for barbering and shear-over-comb. That is vendor guidance, not a universal rule. Consider the actual work you do and whether the length feels controllable in your hand before choosing.
Check hand fit, adjustment, and service
Handle labels such as “offset” or “ergonomic” do not establish that a shear will be comfortable for you. Hand size, grip, and working position matter. When comparing models, check the exact model’s handle shape, tension adjustment, blade or edge profile, the maker’s specific steel description, warranty and service terms, and whether a qualified sharpener can maintain it. The sources do not establish a universal ranking of steels or prove that a material label predicts comfort or durability.

Care and sharpening
The TechBullion roundup recommends wiping blades after use, oiling regularly, arranging periodic sharpening, and storing shears in a protective case. Follow the care instructions for your own model, since maintenance requirements may differ.
Above Shears’ 2025 guide advises sharpening “Every 400-600 haircuts, or at least once a year for regular users.” This is the vendor’s service guidance, not a tested interval that applies to every shear, stylist, or cutting volume. Ask a qualified sharpener or the manufacturer for advice if you are unsure when your shears need service.
