What the Q1 2024 total says—and what it does not
GeekWire reported that tech startups in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest raised more than $433 million in Q1 2024, based on its funding list. It said the total was down 30% from Q4 2023 and slightly higher year over year. That figure is the publication’s roundup total, not an independently audited measure of every regional transaction. The article does not provide a complete quarterly dataset or a reproducible ranking method, so the ten entries should be read as GeekWire’s published list rather than a definitive census of all deals.

- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
For broader market context, GeekWire cited the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor in reporting that U.S. quarterly venture deal value had fallen to its lowest level since 2018. It also quoted NVCA CEO Bobby Franklin: “The venture capital business cycle effectively reset in recent years, and as of early 2024, it still appears to be searching for its level.” PitchBook CEO John Gabbert said: “Investor expectations and benchmarks have increased for deals, leading to fundamentally strong companies attracting investment, while those unable to achieve the growth and profitability characteristics expected by today’s VCs are struggling to find capital.” These comments frame the market in early 2024; they do not establish why any particular company on the list raised money.
Why ExtraHop’s $100 million raise is not on the list
GeekWire explicitly excluded Seattle cybersecurity company ExtraHop’s $100 million January raise. Its stated rationale was that ExtraHop had been founded 17 years earlier and was acquired in a private-equity deal in 2021. The omission reflects the roundup’s startup-focused editorial criteria, rather than a claim that the raise did not happen.

Later figures are a different snapshot
Later regional funding statistics should not be confused with or substituted for the Q1 2024 list:
- Seattle area, Q1 2026: GeekWire reported about $1.5 billion across 69 deals, citing the PitchBook-NVCA Venture Monitor, and said deal count was at its lowest since mid-2020. See GeekWire’s Q1 2026 report.
- British Columbia, Q1 2026: CVCA reported 21 venture deals totaling $356.7 million and identified Vancouver-based Reverb Therapeutics’ $17 million seed round as a notable transaction. See CVCA’s Q1 2026 report.
The 2026 figures cover different periods and geographies: a Seattle-area quarter and a province-wide Canadian quarter, respectively. They are not directly comparable with GeekWire’s broader Pacific Northwest Q1 2024 roundup.
