In late June 2024, PerthNow reported that Tony Galati, owner of the West Australian grocery chain Spudshed, was filming outside the Duomo di Milano when a woman from Perth recognised him and asked for a photo. Galati had announced a “Tony On Tour” trip on social media, and he told followers he was in Milan on business, meeting suppliers. This is a dated personality story from June 2024, not current news, and the report does not say which suppliers he met or what came of the meetings.
What was reported in Milan
According to PerthNow’s report of 26 June 2024, Milan was the first stop on Galati’s “Tony On Tour” trip. While he was filming outside the Duomo di Milano, a woman who said she was from Perth interrupted him and asked for a photo. The report describes the exchange from a social-media video. The woman recognised him as “the spud guy,” and Galati agreed to the photo.
Why Galati said he was in Italy
The report quotes Galati describing the trip as “business,” with the aim of seeing “what authentic products we can bring to our West Australian Spudshed customers.” He said he was meeting suppliers over the following two weeks and put it this way: “I’m meeting with suppliers over the next two weeks to give it my ticket of approval.”
He also asked his followers for suggestions: “Now that I’m here, what else do you recommend that I experience, taste or see?” The report does not list any itinerary beyond Milan as the first stop.

The Perth fan encounter
The fan’s account, as PerthNow quoted it, was: “I was like, oh my god, is that the spud guy?” She added: “That is great. You’ve made my holiday, and you’ve made my trip.” The report does not give her name.
Spudshed background and dated figures
Spudshed’s start is commonly dated to 1998, when the first store opened. UD Trucks Australia’s customer profile of 11 July 2023 describes the business as growing out of a family market garden, and SBS Food’s 2022 profile traces the same family farming background. The figures below come from different dates and should not be read as current.

PerthNow also reported that Spudshed’s Spuddies potato chips were made from potatoes grown on Galati farms at Myalup, Lancelin and Manjimup, and that the chips were sold in Spudshed stores at the time. The same report mentions a clothing collaboration with Perth label Street X. Both were mentioned as context in June 2024. The report does not establish whether either product is still sold.
ABC News reported in 2015 on a long-running dispute between Galati and the former potato regulator. That history is separate from the Milan trip and is not needed to understand the encounter.
