GameStop jokingly declared the “console wars” over after Halo Studios announced that Halo: Campaign Evolved would come to PlayStation 5 as well as Xbox and PC. The White House Rapid Response account joined the joke with an image depicting Donald Trump as Master Chief and the caption “Power to the Players.” Neither post ended console competition or announced a change in Microsoft policy.
Why GameStop said the console wars were over
Halo Studios announced Halo: Campaign Evolved, a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign, on October 24, 2025. Its initial platform list included PlayStation 5 alongside Xbox and PC. The next day, GameStop posted a mock proclamation describing the console wars as an “ongoing and increasingly petty conflict” and declaring their “official cessation.” The stated reason was Halo’s arrival on PlayStation.
GameStop’s post imitated a formal declaration, including the line: “GameStop, acting under its authority as a Neutral Entity and The World’s Retail Gaming & Trade-in Destination, hereby declares the official cessation of the console wars.” It was a company-account joke, not a legal or industry announcement.
What the White House post showed
The White House Rapid Response account amplified the gag with an image depicting Trump as Halo’s Master Chief and the caption “Power to the Players.” GameStop also followed with Trump-and-Halo imagery. The posts were social-media humor and political branding; they did not come from Halo Studios and do not show that Trump caused the game’s release on PlayStation.

What actually changed: Halo is coming to PlayStation
The concrete news behind the meme is a multiplatform release. Xbox Wire confirmed a global launch date of July 28, 2026, for Halo: Campaign Evolved on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PlayStation 5. Xbox Wire gives July 29 as the date in Japan and select Asia-Pacific markets. The announcement says the game supports cross-play and cross-progression across the listed platforms.
Campaign and co-op details
Halo Studios describes the project as a ground-up remake with rebuilt visuals and controls. It includes the original 10-mission campaign plus a three-mission new story arc called Operation: METEORITE. The official announcement also lists solo play and online co-op for up to four players.

Platforms, access, and editions
The official listing names Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC, Steam, and PS5, and identifies Game Pass availability on Xbox and PC. A platform version, subscription access, and a physical edition are different ways of accessing a game; the announcement does not make them interchangeable. It describes a Collector’s Edition with a 12-inch Master Chief statue, an LED Cortana chip, a SteelBook, three concept-art prints, a reimagined physical manual, and a game disc for Xbox Series X or PS5. It does not establish a separate standalone physical-disc edition or current retailer stock.
For current platform details and edition information, see the Xbox Wire announcement. The event began with the GameStop mock proclamation; contemporaneous coverage also described the White House image.

Did the console wars really end?
No. “The console wars” is a popular shorthand for competition among console makers, not a conflict that GameStop or a government account can formally end. Halo’s appearance on PS5 is a real change in where this game is available; the meme does not establish an end to competition between console makers or a broader Microsoft policy announcement.
