That is a ranking by annual production—not by the number of gold mines. The available figures do not establish which country has the most operating mines, or that any country has “taken over” the gold market.
What the gold-production figures show
The USGS’s 2026 Mineral Commodity Summaries report gives estimated 2025 mine production of 380 tonnes for China, 310 tonnes for Russia, and 280 tonnes for Australia. It also lists Canada at 200 tonnes and the United States at 160 tonnes. These are estimates of gold extracted during the year, not counts of mines.

The World Gold Council’s country production series also identifies China as the top producer in 2025, at around 10% of global mine production. The council says the annual series is updated alongside Metals Focus’ Gold Focus report. Figures can differ between publishers: Cochilco’s June 2026 bulletin, for example, reports 381.3 tonnes for China, 312.9 for Australia, and 160.0 for the United States, attributing its figures to World Metal Statistics except for Chile data. For a ranking, use one source’s figures together rather than combining datasets.
Mine production is not the same as mine count or market share
“Largest number of gold mines” asks how many mines a country has. Annual mine production measures how much gold those mines produce, usually in tonnes per year. One does not reveal the other: a country can have fewer, more productive mines, while another has more mines with lower combined output. The World Gold Council’s country series reports production, not a globally comparable inventory of operating mine counts.

“Took over the market” is also unclear without a defined market measure. Mine production is not the same as reserves, central-bank gold holdings, or trading in bullion. The cited 2025 production figures support the narrower conclusion that China led mine output that year; they do not show that it took over the gold market.
Did China overtake Australia?
China ranked ahead of Australia in 2025 mine production in the USGS estimates: 380 tonnes versus 280 tonnes. The World Gold Council likewise identifies China as the 2025 leader. These sources support a comparison for that year, but not a claim that China recently overtook Australia unless the comparison specifies the earlier year and uses a consistent dataset across both years.

Why the “seven countries” headline needs correcting
An article published under the matching headline on March 2, 2025, presents itself as a country production ranking rather than a count of mines. Its stated 2023 figures include 12,000 tonnes for Australia and 11,100 tonnes for Russia; those numbers should not be treated as reliable gold mine-production totals. Current USGS estimates put their 2025 output at 280 and 310 tonnes, respectively.
So a defensible country ranking needs to state the measure, data year, and source. The figures available here support a 2025 production ranking, but not a top-seven ranking by number of mines.

How to read a gold-country ranking
- Check the measure: tonnes produced, number of mines, reserves, and gold holdings answer different questions.
- Check the year: the figures above concern 2025 production, reported in 2026.
- Check the status: USGS labels its 2025 country production figures as estimates.
- Keep sources consistent: reporting coverage and revisions can produce small differences between datasets.
