There is no defensible, comparable public ranking of the 10 richest young-adult (YA) authors. Forbes estimated J.K. Rowling’s net worth at $1.2 billion as of September 15, 2026, but most of the other figures often used in such lists are dated annual earnings—not net worth. They cannot establish who ranks second, tenth, or richest “of all time.”
Why a top-10 net-worth ranking cannot be verified
Net worth is a snapshot of assets minus liabilities. Author earnings are income received over a specified period. The two measures are not interchangeable: an author’s earnings do not reveal taxes, spending, investments, debt, or the value and ownership of rights.

The available figures also come from different dates and methods. A valid ranking would need comparable estimates for the same point in time, using consistent definitions of wealth and transparent treatment of royalties, adaptation rights, other assets, and liabilities. The sources available here do not provide that dataset for ten YA authors. Filling gaps with unsourced celebrity-estimate websites would create an appearance of precision without a reliable basis.
What the available figures do—and do not—say
| Author | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| J.K. Rowling | Forbes estimated $1.2 billion as of September 15, 2026. | A media estimate of net worth, not an audited public accounting of her assets and liabilities. Forbes profile |
| Veronica Roth | About $17 million in Forbes’s 2014 author coverage. | Estimated pre-tax earnings from June 2013 through June 2014—not current net worth. Forbes related the earnings to Divergent sales and its film adaptation. Forbes’s 2014 author ranking |
| John Green | An estimated $9 million in Forbes’s 2014 coverage. | Yearly earnings reported in that historical coverage, not a current net-worth estimate. Forbes’s 2014 author ranking |
| Rick Riordan | $10 million in the Forbes Mexico rendering of the 2014 list. | Reported annual earnings, not current net worth. Forbes’s 2014 author ranking |
| Suzanne Collins | No current net-worth figure established by the cited coverage. | Forbes named Collins in its author earnings coverage and noted her placement in the previous year’s list; that does not establish a current wealth estimate. Forbes’s 2014 author ranking |
| Stephenie Meyer | No current net-worth figure established by the cited biography. | Her official biography supports background on her education and bestseller recognition, not a ranking by wealth. Meyer’s official biography |
How to read Forbes’s 2014 author earnings list
Forbes’s 2014 list estimated authors’ pre-tax earnings for June 2013 through June 2014. The article says it used Nielsen BookScan print, ebook, and audiobook sales, considered film and television adaptation income, and consulted agents, editors, and other experts. That methodology describes a historical income estimate; it does not turn the results into estimates of the authors’ accumulated wealth today. Read Forbes’s 2014 coverage.

For YA authors, the list illustrates how book sales and screen adaptations could contribute to a high-earning year. Roth’s reported figure was tied to Divergent and its film adaptation, while Green’s coverage discussed The Fault in Our Stars. Those examples are useful context for that period, not evidence of a current ranking.
Why Rowling’s figure is a different kind of number
Forbes’s profile gives Rowling a current estimated net worth of $1.2 billion as of September 15, 2026. It is the clearest wealth estimate among these sources, but it remains Forbes’s estimate rather than a public audited account. It also cannot be compared directly with the 2014 earnings figures as though every number measured the same thing. See Forbes’s Rowling profile.

Rowling’s official biography says the first Harry Potter book was published in the UK in 1997 and that the series has sold over 600 million copies in 85 languages. These figures help explain the scale of the franchise; they are not a calculation of her personal net worth. Rowling’s official biography.

A reliable list would need more than a collection of headline figures. For each author, readers would need to know:

Rank #3
- Siege and Storm
- Ruin and Rising
- This product will be an excellent pick for you
- the estimate date and currency;
- whether the number is net worth, annual earnings, or another measure;
- how the source treats royalties, film and television rights, and other assets;
- whether liabilities are included; and
- whether the figure is an audited disclosure, a documented estimate, or an unexplained media claim.
Without consistent evidence on those points—and comparable figures for ten authors—a ranked list would overstate what is known. The published information supports a few dated examples, not a definitive top ten of YA authors by net worth.
