The Department of Justice inquiry became public in March 2025, but the available record here does not establish that price-fixing occurred or verify the inquiry’s current status.
What does the 223% egg price increase mean?
A March 11, 2025, Food & Wine article syndicated by AOL attributed the figure to USDA and reported that the average price per dozen of exported eggs rose from $2.53 to $5.63. The original USDA export table was not verified, so this is best described as a reported USDA figure rather than an independently confirmed statistic.
The 223% figure concerns exports. It does not mean U.S. grocery-store egg prices rose by 223%, and it does not identify why export prices changed.
Did grocery egg prices rise 223%?
No such conclusion follows from the export statistic. Egg prices vary by market and sales channel: an export price, a wholesale price, a price for eggs delivered to retailers, and a checkout price are different measures.

For example, USDA’s January 10, 2025, Egg Markets Overview reported a New York market price of $6.25 per dozen for large cartoned shell eggs delivered to retailers. That is a dated, local delivered-to-retail measure—not a national average grocery price. USDA’s August 1, 2025, overview likewise reported prices across different egg categories and market channels. A sound comparison needs the date, location, channel, grade and size, and egg category.
Is the DOJ investigating egg prices?
The inquiry became public in March 2025, according to a December 11, 2025, court complaint that recounted earlier reporting. The complaint also says Cal-Maine disclosed receiving a civil investigative demand from DOJ in March 2025. That description establishes that the company reportedly received investigative process; it does not establish what DOJ concluded or whether anyone broke the law.

The plaintiffs interpret the decline as connected to the announcement of the investigation. That is their causal argument, not a judicial finding. A price change occurring around the same time as an investigation’s announcement, by itself, cannot establish why the price moved.

No. A reported price movement and an investigation do not prove unlawful coordination. The price figures cited above come with different market labels and sources, while the link between the March decline and the DOJ announcement is the plaintiffs’ interpretation. Neither the complaint nor the reported investigation, on the information available here, amounts to a finding that companies fixed prices.
