Higher production costs, weather-related yield risks and weak prices amid uncertainty over China trade all narrowed already-thin margins. A University of Tennessee estimate put potential statewide soybean losses near $110 million, but that was a projection based on August assumptions—not a final accounting of what farmers lost.
Why Tennessee soybean farmers were under pressure
In a report published September 15, 2025, Tennessee Lookout described farmers facing several pressures at once: persistent inflation had kept production costs high, weather threatened yields, and low commodity prices and uncertainty around China trade weighed on returns. Stefan Maupin, executive director of the Tennessee Soybean Promotion Council, called it “death by a thousand cuts” and said farmers were struggling to break even.
The scale matters to the state’s farm economy. Tennessee farmers planted around 1.75 million soybean acres in 2025, mostly in West and Middle Tennessee. Soybeans generated more than $990 million in Tennessee cash receipts in 2023, and USDA data put the state’s soybean commodity exports that year at $489.4 million, according to the report.
What the nearly $110 million loss estimate means
As of August 12, 2025, the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture estimated soybean losses at about $84 per acre using an assumed yield of 50 bushels per acre. Applied statewide, that amounted to nearly $110 million in projected losses. The estimate could change as costs fluctuated, and it was not a verified final total for the 2025 crop.

- High Yield Bush Growth: midori giant edamame seeds form 24-36 inch nitrogen-fixing bushes, rewarding vegetable garden growers in USDA 3-9 with crunchy pods rich in complete protein.
- Fast Germination: soybean seeds for planting sprout in 5-10 days at 70-90 °F, letting home garden beginners harvest tender edamame in just 80 days while heirloom seeds thrive in loamy soil.
- Nutrient-Rich Snack: soy beans deliver sweet nutty flavor and buttery texture; boil or freeze for soy-protein snacks, soy bean seeds to plant are ideal for survival gardening fans seeking clean non gmo edamame.
- Easy Direct Sow: edamame seeds for planting outdoors need 1" depth and 12" spacing, no trellis required; bush habit suits containers or raised beds, making veggie seeds ideal for small spaces.
- Disease-Smart Cultivation: edamame seeds to plant resist common pests when grown in full sun and evenly moist soil; gardening kit growers mulch to conserve water and pick bright green pods before they yellow.
The figure describes an economic projection under specified assumptions—not a uniform loss on every farm. Individual results depend on yields, costs, sale prices and other farm-specific factors; the cited reporting does not establish final statewide net losses or farm-level outcomes.
How weather added to the squeeze
Weather conditions varied over the growing season. Spring storms and flooding delayed planting in West Tennessee, while later dry weeks reduced soil moisture. Maupin said some farmers were reporting yield expectations closer to 30 bushels per acre.

That figure should not be treated as a statewide result or compared directly with every other yield number. The USDA forecast cited in the September 2025 report was 53.5 bushels per acre nationally, while Tennessee’s average for 2014–2024 was 47.4 bushels per acre. The national forecast, the state’s historical average and individual farmers’ expectations describe different populations and time frames.
What tariffs did—and did not—explain
Trade uncertainty was one part of the 2025 pressure, not the whole explanation. The September 2025 report connected concern about China trade to weak prices, but it does not establish that tariffs alone caused the projected losses. Its account of trade conditions is a snapshot from that period, not evidence of the status of negotiations, prices or buyer behavior in October 2026.

The report also put the current pressures in historical context. A University of Tennessee Agriculture Extension study estimated nearly $40 million in Tennessee economic losses tied to 2018 soybean tariff uncertainty, even after government payments. Separately, the USDA estimated $9.4 billion in losses for U.S. soybean farmers that year, according to the American Soybean Association as cited by Tennessee Lookout. Those figures cover different geographies and should not be treated as directly comparable.

Farmer Bridge Assistance
A January 7, 2026, Tennessee Lookout follow-up reported a Farmer Bridge Assistance soybean rate of $30.88 per eligible acre, capped at $155,000 per producer, with payments expected to start February 28. The report quoted Maupin calling the assistance a good first step while saying payments would not make up for the losses. These are time-sensitive program details; the cited report does not establish current enrollment status, eligibility or payment status.

Export-market development
On July 20, 2026, the Tennessee Department of Agriculture announced that Tennessee was joining the U.S. Soybean Export Council and U.S. Grains Council to develop international markets. Agriculture Commissioner Andy Holt said Tennessee crops were in demand around the world, and U.S. Soybean Export Council CEO Jim Sutter welcomed the state as a partner in market development. The announcement describes an effort and its aims; it does not report resulting sales or prove that farm profitability improved.

The strongest supported conclusion is that Tennessee soybean farmers entered the 2025 harvest facing a combination of cost, yield and market risks, with the state’s projected loss figure dependent on assumptions rather than final accounts. Later assistance and export-promotion actions are relevant developments, but the cited reporting does not show final 2025 yields, net losses, individual farm results or a recovery in profitability.

- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
