Often, yes—but make it a brief, relevant follow-up after submitting your formal application, and follow any contact instructions or timeline in the job posting. A LinkedIn message is optional, and available guidance does not establish that it improves your chances of being hired.
Should you message the hiring manager?
A concise, courteous note can be appropriate when you have a genuine reason to reach out. It is not a substitute for applying through the employer’s stated process, and you should not treat a reply as expected.
First check the posting for a named contact, preferred channel, follow-up timing, or a request not to contact the team directly. Those instructions take precedence over general etiquette. LinkedIn notes that some job application buttons send applicants to an employer website or job board, so complete the application wherever the posting directs you: LinkedIn Help: Apply for jobs on LinkedIn.
When and whom should you contact?
Follow the employer’s timeline first
If the posting does not give a timeline, career-center advice commonly suggests waiting about a week. Santa Clara University says, “As a general rule, wait about one week after submitting your application before reaching out to the employer.” UNLV recommends about 7–10 days. These are useful defaults, not universal rules; the employer’s instructions should guide you.

Start with the contact named in the posting
If the posting identifies a recruiter, job poster, or other contact, use that person and the channel provided. If no contact is listed, HR or recruiting may be a sensible first stop because applications often pass through those teams before reaching a hiring manager. Career guidance notes that direct manager outreach can be received differently from one situation to another.
If you are already connected to the hiring manager, a brief LinkedIn note is one possible follow-up channel. If you are not connected, consider whether the posting provides another contact route before sending a cold message.

What should you say?
Keep the message short enough to read quickly. Identify the position and application date, mention one concrete qualification that matches the role, and thank the recipient for their time. A genuine shared connection or specific role-related detail can make the note more personal; avoid a generic pitch or asking for a guaranteed interview.
Hi [Name] — I applied for the [Role] position on [date] and wanted to briefly introduce myself. My experience with [specific relevant skill or result] seems closely aligned with [specific role requirement or team need]. I’m interested in the opportunity and appreciate your time. Best, [Your name]

Replace the bracketed text with accurate specifics. If you cannot point to a relevant qualification, leave out the pitch and send only a short introduction—or skip the message.
How to handle common situations

What if they do not reply?
Do not read silence as a judgment about your qualifications. The guidance does not promise a response, so avoid repeated status checks or messages intended to force an answer. If the employer provided an official follow-up channel or timeline, use it instead.

LinkedIn Help describes a narrow platform-specific case: if you need to change an application submitted through LinkedIn, you can contact the job poster via InMail. That exception does not mean you should bypass the employer’s application process for ordinary follow-up.
