For a used Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2019 and 2020 are the strongest candidates in one fixed-window comparison of federal complaint reports—but that is a screening signal, not proof either year is trouble-free. The same comparison flags 2011 and 2014 for higher complaint activity. Consumer Reports’ survey summaries, meanwhile, describe several recent Grand Cherokee years as less reliable than same-year cars overall. The best choice depends on the evidence you value and, most of all, the condition and history of the specific SUV.
Which Grand Cherokee years look best in the complaint data?
Model Year Index compared complaints filed during each model year’s first 60 months on the road, limiting the advantage older vehicles would get from having more time to accumulate reports. Its figures are ratios to the Grand Cherokee’s own model-year-history median—not failure probabilities and not comparisons with other SUVs.
| Model year | Complaint volume vs. model-history median | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| 2019 | 0.41× | Lower complaint activity in this comparison |
| 2020 | 0.44× | Lower complaint activity in this comparison |
| 2011 | 2.31× | Higher complaint activity in this comparison |
| 2014 | 3.12× | Higher complaint activity in this comparison |
These ratios come from Model Year Index’s data vintage of August 9, 2026. Its page reports 9,226 complaints across 12 scored model years and 80 recall campaigns. The site labels 2010 and 2020 its best years and 2011 and 2014 years to avoid; those labels summarize its complaint-based method, not a definitive reliability verdict. See the Grand Cherokee comparison and methodology.
For context, the same comparison reports these ratios for the other scored years: 2010, 0.13×; 2012, 1.94×; 2013, 0.89×; 2015, 1.57×; 2016, 0.57×; 2017, 0.56×; 2018, 1.15×; and 2021, 1.11×. Lower values mean fewer complaints relative to that site’s model-history median during the measured window, not lower odds that a particular vehicle will need repairs.

Why reliability rankings disagree
Complaint counts are not confirmed defects
NHTSA complaint reports are voluntary and unverified: they describe problems owners report, not necessarily defects confirmed by an investigation. Reporting rates can vary, and a vehicle with fewer complaints is not automatically more dependable. Model Year Index also says it withholds cross-model comparisons because it lacks production-volume data for that purpose.
Survey ratings measure a different kind of evidence
Consumer Reports describes its reliability history as drawing on subscriber surveys across 20 potential trouble spots for 2000–2025 vehicles. Its indexed summaries characterize the 2023, 2024, and 2025 Grand Cherokee as less reliable than other cars from the same model year. Those descriptions reflect survey evidence, not a controlled inspection or a diagnosis of an individual SUV. The accessible summaries do not establish precise scores or sample sizes for those years, so they do not support a numerical ranking against the complaint ratios. See Consumer Reports’ 2025 Grand Cherokee overview and its Grand Cherokee reliability-history description.

Recent complaint totals may be incomplete
Model Year Index marks 2022–2025 provisional because those years had not completed its 60-month observation window as of its August 9, 2026 data vintage. A shorter window can make a recent year appear favorable simply because there has been less time for reports to arrive. Treat those years as incomplete comparisons, not proven winners.

Use model-year patterns to narrow the search, then judge the actual SUV on its own records and condition. A well-maintained vehicle from a year with more complaints may be a better buy than a neglected example from a year with fewer.

- Check open recalls by VIN. Search the vehicle’s identification number in NHTSA’s recall lookup. A model-year campaign tally does not show whether a particular SUV has an unrepaired recall; confirm the VIN-specific status and ask for documentation of completed recall work.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for consistent service documentation and investigate gaps or repeated repairs. A vehicle-history report can add context, but it does not confirm mechanical condition.
- Match the vehicle to your needs and compare like with like. Compare mileage, configuration, powertrain, equipment, and condition across the candidates you are considering. The available year-level evidence does not establish a universally best engine, trim, or drivetrain.
- Arrange an independent inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific SUV before purchase when the price and risk warrant it. The inspection complements—not replaces—recall, history, and maintenance checks.
