Rogers Communications confirmed on April 27, 2026, that some employee groups were offering voluntary departure and retirement programs. Rogers spokesperson Zac Carreiro described the programs as part of an effort to adjust the company’s cost structure. As quoted by Canadian HR Reporter, he said some teams had chosen to offer voluntary departure and retirement programs so employees could decide whether to stay or begin a new chapter.
The distinction is between eligibility and actual job losses. The reported “half” refers to employees who might be offered a package. The Canadian Press reported that Bloomberg put eligibility at around 10,000 employees; Rogers did not disclose an offer count in that account. Reuters likewise reported that no reduction target had been stated (The Canadian Press via CityNews; Reuters via Investing.com).

How the workforce figure relates to the estimate
Rogers had around 25,000 employees at the end of 2025, according to its annual report as described by The Canadian Press. That total included about 3,000 MLSE employees in Sports Business Journal’s account, while MLSE employees were among the reported exclusions. The roughly 10,000 figure is an estimate of employees reportedly eligible for an offer, not a count of departures.

What the financial context does—and does not—show
Rogers said it planned to reduce 2026 capital spending by 30% compared with 2025, according to The Canadian Press. Separately, Canadian HR Reporter’s account of Rogers’ first-quarter update said the company expected 2026 capital expenditures of $2.5 billion to $2.7 billion. It reported first-quarter total service revenue of $4.9 billion, up 10% year over year, and adjusted EBITDA of $2.4 billion, up 5%.
These figures provide business context, but they do not establish a direct cause for the employee programs or predict how many people will accept. The company’s stated explanation was that it was adjusting its cost structure to reflect current business realities (The Canadian Press; Canadian HR Reporter).

The reports do not establish an acceptance rate, a completed-departure count, a net workforce reduction, or the exact terms of the packages. Until Rogers or reliable reporting provides those figures, the eligibility estimate should not be treated as a realized job-loss number.
