Some reports describe base salary; others include backend bonuses or incentives. Here is what published estimates say, with those distinctions made clear.
Reported pay by MCU movie
The figures below come from secondary reporting and compilations, not a publicly verified Marvel salary ledger. “Reported amount” should not be read as a confirmed base salary or final payment unless the source identifies it that way.
| Film | Reported amount | What the estimate represents |
|---|---|---|
| Iron Man (2008) | $500,000 | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; the page does not establish this as a studio-confirmed figure. |
| The Incredible Hulk (2008) | Not established | The reviewed sources do not provide a reliable per-film amount. |
| Iron Man 2 (2010) | $10 million | The Guardian reported that a six-film deal raised Downey’s basic salary to $10 million per film while retaining incentives. Celebrity Net Worth also lists $10 million. |
| The Avengers (2012) | $50 million | The Guardian reported $50 million in 2019. Celebrity Net Worth breaks its estimate into $10 million base pay plus $40 million backend bonus. |
| Iron Man 3 (2013) | $75 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate; not a confirmed studio disclosure. |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate. |
| Captain America: Civil War (2016) | $40 million | Celebrity Net Worth estimate. The Guardian says this film had a separate arrangement. |
| Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017) | $15 million | The Independent reported an estimate of $5 million per day for three days of work; Celebrity Net Worth lists $15 million. |
| Avengers: Infinity War (2018) | At least $75 million, according to one reported estimate | The Guardian attributed the estimate to The Hollywood Reporter, but also reported a disputed lower estimate of about $20 million. Celebrity Net Worth lists $75 million. |
| Avengers: Endgame (2019) | Expected/estimated at $75 million | The Guardian described $75 million as expected in 2019; Celebrity Net Worth lists the amount. The Guardian also noted a disputed estimate around $20 million. This is not a confirmed final payment. |

Why reported amounts differ
Base salary is not the same as a total payday
The Guardian described Downey’s reported deal as including a base salary and substantial backend participation, commonly thought to be around 2.5% of a film’s profits. It reported that the six-film deal negotiated before Iron Man 2 raised his basic salary to $10 million per film while preserving incentives. That account helps explain why a film’s reported total earnings can be much higher than its base pay. The 2.5% figure is a reported description of the arrangement, not an independently verified term sheet.
#1 Best Overall
Some appearances had distinct arrangements
The Guardian reported separate arrangements for Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. The Independent’s Homecoming estimate—$5 million a day for three days—describes a reported amount tied to that engagement, rather than evidence of a standard per-film rate for every MCU appearance.
Conflicting estimates are especially visible for the Avengers films
For Infinity War, The Guardian reported the $75 million estimate attributed to The Hollywood Reporter, but also noted a disputed estimate of about $20 million. It described $75 million for Endgame as expected, while noting a similar lower estimate. Without a consistent public definition of what each number includes, selecting one figure as the definitive payment would overstate what the reporting establishes.

Can you add the figures to get Downey’s MCU total?
Not reliably. There is no authoritative public ledger that gives a consistently defined amount for every MCU appearance, and the reviewed estimates mix base pay with backend and other incentives. Celebrity Net Worth’s page also gives conflicting cumulative totals: its key fact says $345.5 million, while its listed film entries add up to $380.5 million. Those figures should not be presented as a reliable total earned from MCU films.
The safest reading is that the early Iron Man figure is reported at $500,000, while later estimates rise substantially as backend participation and incentives enter the picture. The exact amount Downey received for each film—and a dependable cumulative total—cannot be established from these published figures.
