Robinhood announced Robinhood Social in September 2025, months after CEO Vlad Tenev had reportedly raised the prospect that copy-trading platforms could draw greater regulatory attention. The apparent shift is real, but it does not mean Robinhood offers automatic portfolio copying—or that regulators have settled the legal questions. Robinhood’s current help materials describe Social as an in-app community where users can view and discuss activity and choose to make certain trades themselves.
Why Robinhood’s announcement drew attention
On September 9, 2025, TechCrunch reported that Robinhood had announced Robinhood Social at a company event. The initial plan described in that report was to start with an invited group and then expand access. Those were plans at the time, not a statement of the feature’s current rollout status. TechCrunch’s September 2025 report also recalled comments Tenev made in a December 2024 conversation about Dub, a copy-trading platform.
According to TechCrunch, Tenev suggested that copy trading could become of greater interest to regulators and used the phrase “magnifying glass” in describing Dub’s comparatively smaller size. These are remarks as reported by TechCrunch, not a regulator’s finding or a formal legal warning to every competitor. The contrast that caught attention was that Robinhood later entered the same broad product category.
What Robinhood Social lets users do
Robinhood’s current Help Center describes Social as a forum within the Robinhood app. Users can explore shared trades, profit-and-loss information and portfolios; follow profiles and a personalized feed; and see commentary and reported political trading activity. Users may also post eligible trades with commentary and initiate eligible trades from posts. Posting is a choice: Robinhood says trades are not shared automatically. Robinhood Social Help Center

Profiles are visible to Robinhood Social users and can be shared outside the app. Trading statistics are optional. The Help Center lists one-day P&L, one-year P&L and profit rate; it defines profit rate as profitable trades divided by total trades in the prior month. A verified badge confirms account identity, Robinhood says, but is not an endorsement of the account, its content or its trades.
Availability and eligibility
Robinhood says Social is currently available only in the United States, and activation depends on availability in a user’s account. Some people are ineligible, including securities-licensed professionals, people associated with regulated financial institutions and Robinhood employees. The Help Center does not establish that every U.S. account has access.

Does Robinhood automatically copy another investor’s trades?
No automatic portfolio copying is described in Robinhood’s current Social help materials. TechCrunch characterized the approach announced in September 2025 as manual replication of individual trades: a user sees activity and decides whether to place an eligible trade. That is materially different from a system that automatically mirrors another person’s portfolio in real time.
In the same September 2025 report, TechCrunch described eToro CopyTrader and Dub as services offering automatic portfolio copying. Those descriptions are dated to the report; they should not be taken as confirmation of either service’s present-day mechanics or availability in a particular location.

The distinction matters for control and effort. Manual replication leaves each trade decision with the user, who must notice the activity and decide what to do. Automatic copying delegates execution to a service’s copying mechanism. Neither format, by itself, establishes that an investor will achieve the same results as the person or portfolio they follow.

The announcement and Tenev’s earlier remarks create a product-and-messaging contrast, not proof that the law changed or that regulators approved Robinhood Social. TechCrunch interpreted the launch in the context of a shifting regulatory climate, but the reporting cited here does not establish that copy trading became definitively permissible or that the earlier concerns were resolved.

Robinhood’s Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, filed with the SEC, says the company operates amid extensive, complex and changing laws and regulations. It also warns generally that new initiatives can face legal restrictions or enhanced regulatory scrutiny. What Robinhood and Dub said about the launch
When TechCrunch asked whether Robinhood had acquired Dub, a Robinhood spokesperson replied: “No, this is not an acquisition, we are building our own platform in Robinhood.” Dub founder Steven Wang, responding by email to the launch, said: “It’s validating to see Robinhood launch something in our space. It shows they view what we’re building as threatening enough to their core business that they feel the need to copy elements of it.” These are statements each party made to TechCrunch, not independent evidence about the companies’ motives.
Wang had also told TechCrunch in February 2025: “But at the end of the day, making it super easy to trade without expert guidance, without education, is really just gambling for the broader population.” His comment reflects his criticism of easy trading without guidance; it is not a finding about Robinhood Social or a regulatory determination.
