ResearchGate said it received a $52.6 million growth investment in November 2015, with Bill Gates among the existing investors who participated. The company announced the financing on February 28, 2017. The $52.6 million was the total round—not a disclosed contribution from Gates; the company and contemporaneous reports did not state how much he invested.
What did ResearchGate announce?
In its February 28, 2017 announcement, ResearchGate described the financing as a growth investment of $52.6 million. The company said it had received the money in November 2015, more than a year before making the investment public.
The distinction matters: $52.6 million is the reported amount for the financing as a whole. Neither ResearchGate’s announcement nor the contemporaneous coverage specifies Gates’s individual contribution.
What was Bill Gates’s role?
ResearchGate listed Gates among its existing investors who participated in the investment. GeekWire also reported that he had backed an earlier $35 million round and participated again, but that report did not identify his contribution to the 2015 financing.
#1 Best Overall
GeekWire said German regulatory disclosure requirements explained why the round was reported later. That explanation was GeekWire’s account; ResearchGate’s announcement confirms the November 2015 receipt date but does not give a reason for the delay.
Who else participated?
ResearchGate named Wellcome Trust, Goldman Sachs Investment Partners, and Four Rivers Group as investors in the financing. It also cited participation from Ashton Kutcher, Groupe Arnault, Xavier Niel, and existing investors Tenaya Capital, Benchmark, and Founders Fund, alongside Gates.

Why do some reports call it a Series D?
ResearchGate called the financing a “growth investment.” TechCrunch described it as a Series D and reported that it brought the company’s total funding to more than $100 million. Those are TechCrunch’s classification and cumulative-funding figure; they do not replace the company’s wording. The available announcements and coverage do not provide a valuation, term sheet, or investor-by-investor breakdown.

ResearchGate described itself as a professional network for scientists, where members shared research updates and publications, including code and negative results. In its 2017 announcement, the company reported more than 12 million members, over half a million research updates shared daily, and 2.5 million publications shared monthly. These are historical figures reported by ResearchGate in 2017, not current platform statistics.
