If a FedEx package requires a signature, tell the driver you refuse it and do not sign for receipt. If a package that did not require a signature has already been delivered, call FedEx customer support; FedEx says a representative can help arrange pickup or direct you to a dropoff location. Refusal makes a shipment undeliverable, but it does not guarantee a return, free shipping, or a refund.
How to refuse a FedEx package
If a signature is required
Tell the driver you do not want the shipment and decline to sign. FedEx’s U.S. Delivery Manager FAQ says not to sign acknowledging receipt when refusing a package. For most businesses, a receptionist or gatekeeper can refuse it on the recipient’s behalf.
If the package was left without a signature
FedEx says you can still refuse a package after delivery. Call customer support. A representative can help schedule a pickup or direct you to a FedEx dropoff location. Simply leaving the package untouched does not, by itself, trigger an immediate return.
What happens after you refuse it?
A refusal makes the shipment undeliverable, but the next step depends on the sender, service, and applicable terms. Under FedEx’s U.S. Service Guide, FedEx may contact the sender for instructions, and an undeliverable shipment may be returned at the payer’s expense. The sender may determine what happens next; do not assume every refused shipment is automatically returned or destroyed.

Possible billing consequences in the United States
Under those U.S. terms, if a package billed to the recipient is refused or returned to the sender, billing automatically changes to the sender. Return charges may also apply under the shipment’s terms. These provisions do not establish the charges for every country, service, or billing arrangement.
If you miss a delivery attempt
A missed delivery is different from telling FedEx you refuse the package. FedEx’s U.S. FAQ says a signature-required package is automatically returned to the sender after three missed delivery attempts. That guidance is specific to the FAQ and should not be treated as a rule for every FedEx service or destination.

Check tracking and delivery options
If you have a door tag, check the options available through FedEx Delivery Manager; an eligible shipment may offer a reject-shipment option. Availability depends on the shipment and any shipper restrictions. You can also use the tracking or door-tag number to check the package’s status.
In FedEx tracking, “Returning to shipper” means the shipper recalled the package or FedEx reached the maximum number of delivery attempts. The status describes what is happening to the shipment; it does not determine whether a seller will issue a refund.

International packages: local rules may differ
FedEx’s France FAQ on refusing a parcel says a recipient may refuse an international package, including because it is damaged, an order was cancelled, or the recipient changed their mind. The driver may ask for signed confirmation and take the package to a delivery depot. FedEx then contacts the shipper to ask whether it should be returned or destroyed. This is France-specific guidance, not a universal procedure.
The same FAQ cautions that import duties and taxes may still be due. Ask the relevant customs authority whether a refund is available; refusing the parcel does not itself guarantee that duties or taxes will be refunded.

Refusal does not guarantee a purchase refund
FedEx’s delivery guidance explains how the carrier handles a refused shipment; it does not set a seller’s cancellation, refund, or exchange policy. Contact the seller or marketplace directly, and keep your order details and tracking information. A carrier’s acceptance of a refusal is not proof that the seller has approved a refund or that return costs will be waived.

Contact FedEx support and the sender or seller for instructions. The cited FedEx guidance does not establish a separate fraud-specific refusal process, so do not open or handle a package if you have a safety concern; follow directions from the appropriate authorities.
