Reliance Industries withdrew its application to trademark “Operation Sindoor” on May 8, 2025, one day after filing it. The company said the application had been submitted inadvertently by a junior person without authorization and that it had no intention of trademarking the phrase.
What happened
On May 7, 2025, Reliance filed a word-mark application for “Operation Sindoor” in Class 41. Contemporaneous reporting identified the application number as 6994264. Jio Studios, a Reliance unit, requested its withdrawal on May 8, according to the company statement reported by The Tribune.
The Tribune reported Reliance’s explanation: “Reliance Industries has no intention of trademarking ‘Operation Sindoor’, a phrase which is now a part of the national consciousness as an evocative symbol of Indian bravery.” That is the company’s stated position, not an independent finding about the phrase or the filing.
What the filing status did—and did not—mean
A report said the application’s status on the morning of May 8 was “Formalities Chk Pass.” That describes a procedural check; it does not mean the trademark was granted or registered. The reported sequence was filing, a formalities check, and then a request to withdraw. LiveMint’s account reported the application details and withdrawal.

Class 41 covers a range of educational, cultural and entertainment-related activities. Contemporaneous coverage described it as including education and training, film and media production, live performances and events, digital content delivery and publishing, and cultural and sporting activities. A class identifies the goods or services covered by an application; it is not evidence that a registration was granted.
