Reliance Jio announced higher mobile tariffs on 27 June 2024, and Airtel followed on 28 June. Both companies’ revised tariffs took effect on 3 July 2024. A separate Airtel postpaid increase was reported for 8 October 2026; it was not part of the 2024 changes.
When did Jio and Airtel’s new prices start?
Jio announced revised unlimited mobile plans on 27 June 2024. Airtel announced revised mobile tariffs the next day, 28 June. Both sets of new tariffs took effect from 3 July 2024. Reliance Industries’ announcement and Airtel’s announcement set out the companies’ respective changes; Jio’s tariff FAQ specifies 00:00 on 3 July for its revised tariffs.
Which Jio and Airtel plans got more expensive?
The available examples show specific changes, not a complete tariff list. Jio’s cited examples include a prepaid plan with 2 GB total data and unlimited calls, which rose from ₹155 to ₹189, and a plan with 1 GB of daily data, which rose from ₹209 to ₹249. TechCrunch reported Airtel increases of about 10–20% across popular plans at the time. That range should not be read as the increase for every Airtel plan. How much did my recharge go up?
For the two reported Jio examples, the ₹155 plan increased by ₹34, while the ₹209 plan increased by ₹40. Your own change depends on the specific plan; the cited examples do not establish the increase for every recharge. Check the tariff for your service area and connection type rather than treating those 2024 figures as current offers.

For a prepaid recharge already queued before the change, Jio’s FAQ explained that the applicable benefit depended on the recharge date, including when a queued plan activated after the existing plan expired. That was Jio’s explanation of the 2024 transition, not a general rule for recharges today. Jio’s FAQ describes that transition.
Why did Airtel raise its tariffs?
Airtel said its entry-level plan increase amounted to less than 70 paise per day. The company argued that mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) needed to rise above ₹300 to support investment in network technology and spectrum and to provide a modest return on capital. This is Airtel’s stated rationale, not an independent finding about the industry. In its 28 June 2024 release, Airtel also said customers on plans with 2 GB of data per day or more could use unlimited 5G data.

Did Airtel raise postpaid prices on 8 October 2026?
Financial Express reported that Airtel raised monthly postpaid prices by ₹50 from 8 October 2026, citing a Motilal Oswal report. The reported new rates included ₹499 for an individual plan, up from ₹449, and ₹749 for a two-member family plan, up from ₹699. Financial Express also listed changes for four- and five-member family plans. These are reported Airtel postpaid rates for that later change, not the June 2024 mobile-tariff announcement. Financial Express’ report attributes the figures to Motilal Oswal.
The reviewed sources do not establish a corresponding general Jio tariff increase on or around 8 October 2026. TRAI’s regulatory records alone do not establish that a Jio price increase occurred.

How to check and compare current mobile tariffs
Tariffs can vary by operator, service area and connection type, and they change over time. Use your operator’s current plan listing or TRAI’s tariff lookup, which lets users select those details. For a meaningful Jio-versus-Airtel comparison, match the same service area and connection type, then compare:
- Total cost over the period you expect to use the plan
- Included voice calls, SMS and data, including daily data limits and validity
- 5G eligibility and local network coverage
- For postpaid family plans, the total cost for the number of members you need
- Any bundled extras that matter to you
The available sources do not provide a complete, current, like-for-like plan comparison, so they do not support a blanket conclusion that either operator is always cheaper or better.
