NoDesk began as Daniel’s response to a need he saw after moving to remote work: a free, curated resource for digital nomads and remote workers. He dates its launch to July 2015. In an essay marking the project’s fifth anniversary, he described how it grew into a broader collection of remote jobs, companies, articles, and other resources—and how the rebuild changed the work of maintaining it.
Why Daniel started NoDesk
Daniel says he created NoDesk after transitioning to remote work and finding that people needed an accessible place to discover useful information, resources, and job opportunities. He was also learning to code, so he approached the project as a chance to learn by building something practical.
He dates the launch to July 2015. A few weeks later, a community member posted the site on Product Hunt, which Daniel describes as a welcome from the maker community. In his five-year retrospective, he summed up the purpose this way: “Our mission is to enable talented humans and companies to work together remotely.”
What NoDesk had become by its fifth anniversary
By July 2020, Daniel said the project’s purpose had sharpened around helping individuals and companies work together remotely. He described NoDesk 2.0 as a redesign and rebuild that kept the original aim of serving remote workers.

Remote jobs
The job board could be searched by title, company, and keyword, with location filters to account for roles that were remote but limited to particular places. Collections grouped listings by role, job type, and remote location.
Company directory
NoDesk also listed remote-first and remote-friendly companies. Daniel described this directory as a work in progress, with company profiles being updated.

Articles, blog, and books
The site brought together remote-work and digital-nomad articles in a chronological collection that readers could browse by topic. It also included the Intrinsic blog and a books section. In discussing the blog, Daniel cited Sebastian Junger’s Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging in connection with competence, authenticity, and connection.
Newsletter
Daniel described a free Thursday newsletter featuring remote jobs, community stories, ideas, and occasional offbeat material. His 2020 essay also mentioned an optional paid subscription, but it does not establish whether that offer or its terms remain available.

How Daniel said he curated the site
In the 2020 account, Daniel said he selected links by hand rather than relying on bots or computer algorithms. He also said he reviewed job submissions before publication and had encountered attempts to submit scam jobs. Those statements describe his practices at the time; the essay does not verify what moderation or curation processes NoDesk uses today.

Daniel says he rewrote the code, changed much of the site structure, and redid its design. For that 2020 build, he named Hugo as the static site generator, Tachyons as the CSS framework, and Netlify as the host. He also mentioned Heroicons, Refactoring UI, Tailwind CSS, Tailwind UI, and Google’s Noto font in discussing icons, design inspiration, and typography. Stripe handled payments and Substack powered the newsletter, according to the essay.

The challenge of rebuilding a working product
Daniel contrasts the early project’s focus on exciting work, learning, and building only necessary features with the later rebuild. Once a product is functioning, changing its structure can be harder: the rebuild brought more unknowns and a greater risk of over-engineering. His retrospective is a founder’s account, not proof that one development approach works for every project, but it makes a useful distinction between starting small and revising something people already use.
What this five-year retrospective does—and does not—tell us
Daniel’s 2020 essay documents how he understood NoDesk at its fifth anniversary: a project that began as a curated remote-work resource and expanded into jobs, company listings, articles, a blog, books, and a newsletter. It also records the tools and practices he associated with that period.
The essay is not a current service listing. It does not establish whether NoDesk remains available, whether its sections or newsletter continue, what any current subscription costs, or whether its curation and technology have changed since 2020. The best way to read its figures and product details is as a snapshot of Daniel’s account of the project at that milestone.
