Rahul Bajaj was an Indian industrialist who led Bajaj Auto for decades and spoke publicly about business, the economy and society. The phrase “wouldn’t shut up” is a sharp editorial shorthand, not a formal description; his dated speeches show a leader willing to put his views on record.
Who was Rahul Bajaj?
Rahul Bajaj was born on 10 June 1938 and died on 12 February 2022, aged 83. Bajaj Auto says he became its CEO in 1968 and describes him as group chairman for more than four decades. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 2001. Bajaj Auto’s company statement records his dates, leadership and award.
His influence was not confined to his company. The Jamnalal Bajaj Foundation’s profile records that he served two terms as president of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and chaired the board of governors of IIT Bombay.
Why was he known for speaking his mind?
The most direct evidence is what he said publicly, rather than a broad label applied after the fact. Bajaj Auto’s speech archive preserves interventions on Indian business, the economy, politics and society. It is a company-selected collection, not a complete record of every public comment he made.

A view of business as collective work
Opening a speech to the Indore Management Association on 6 February 2015, he said: “Business is a team game.” In the same address, he added: “We should seek inspiration from it to create the future, but we must not wallow in it.” The remarks place his candour alongside a focus on collective effort and forward-looking leadership.
A defined focus for Bajaj Auto
In the archive, Bajaj described the company’s focus as “2 & 3 wheelers, that is, the mobility business.” That statement expresses a strategic boundary for the business; it should not be taken as a summary of all his views on industry or public policy.
When did he leave the chairmanship?
Bajaj Auto’s 2022 annual report records that Rahul Bajaj resigned as chairman and chair of its CSR Committee on 30 April 2021, becoming chairman emeritus. At the 2021 annual general meeting, the company said the emeritus term began on 1 May 2021 and would run for five years. The role was described as mentoring and advisory, covering strategy, governance, external relationships and brand matters. The company’s annual reports and AGM materials document the transition.
What do the company’s figures say—and not say?
Bajaj Auto reported net sales of ₹32,136 crore for FY2022, compared with ₹27,133 crore for FY2021. These are company revenue figures in the 2022 annual report; they are not measures of Rahul Bajaj’s personal wealth and do not, by themselves, establish that he personally caused a change in sales.
