Un SKU (« stock keeping unit », ou unité de gestion des stocks) est un code interne qu’un commerçant attribue à une référence pour suivre son stock, ses ventes et ses opérations. Chaque entreprise choisit sa propre nomenclature : un SKU n’est donc pas un identifiant universel et ne remplace pas un GTIN, un UPC ou un code-barres.
À quoi sert un SKU ?
Un SKU permet à une entreprise de reconnaître une référence dans son propre système. Il peut servir au suivi des quantités, aux rapports de vente, au repérage des articles en entrepôt, à la préparation des commandes et au traitement des retours. Shopify le décrit comme un code utilisé en interne pour suivre le stock et produire des rapports. Shopify explique l’utilisation des SKU pour gérer le stock.
Le commerçant définit le code et son format. Deux vendeurs peuvent donc attribuer des SKU différents au même produit. Le code organise leur inventaire; il ne constitue pas une identité reconnue entre entreprises. Un SKU est utile, mais n’est pas obligatoire dans tous les contextes. Shopify recommande de l’utiliser pour le suivi, les rapports, la préparation des commandes et certaines intégrations.
Chaque variante doit-elle avoir son propre SKU ?
En général, oui si la variante est gérée séparément. Une couleur ou une taille sélectionnable, comptée, préparée ou réapprovisionnée comme une référence distincte devrait avoir son propre SKU. Par exemple, un t-shirt proposé en trois tailles et quatre couleurs représente douze variantes, donc douze SKU si chacune est suivie séparément.

Cette distinction aide à éviter les erreurs de préparation et de comptage. Elle ne signifie pas qu’il faut créer un nouveau code pour chaque exemplaire physique : le SKU identifie la référence gérée, tandis que le système suit la quantité disponible.
Comment créer une nomenclature utile
Le format est libre, mais une convention partagée facilite la lecture et réduit les doublons. Shopify recommande des codes courts, simples et cohérents, en évitant les caractères facilement confondus et en donnant une fonction claire à chaque partie du code. Les conseils Shopify sur la création des SKU donnent notamment les exemples 4225-776-3234, qui encode une marque, un style et une taille, et WAL_BLK_25, pour un stylo en noyer, à encre noire, avec une pointe de 2,5 mm.

- Définissez une convention compréhensible par toute l’équipe. Décidez quelles informations sont utiles, par exemple le type de produit, la couleur ou la taille, et conservez le même ordre.
- Réservez les éléments du code aux différences importantes. Évitez d’y intégrer des détails changeants comme le prix lorsqu’ils ont déjà un champ dédié dans votre système.
- Attribuez un SKU unique à chaque variante gérée séparément. Vérifiez les doublons avant de publier ou d’importer les références.
- Testez la nomenclature dans vos outils. Vérifiez son fonctionnement dans le système de caisse, le suivi de stock et les exports avant de l’étendre à tout le catalogue.
- Conservez les identifiants standard dans leurs champs propres. Si un canal de vente demande un GTIN, un SKU interne ne le remplace pas.
Si vous gérez plusieurs emplacements, gardez un SKU cohérent pour la même variante et suivez séparément les quantités par emplacement. Des étiquettes affichant le SKU peuvent aider à localiser les articles ou à traiter les retours, mais elles ne sont pas une exigence universelle. Shopify décrit ces usages opérationnels des SKU.
SKU, GTIN, UPC, EAN et code-barres : quelle différence ?
Le SKU est propre au système interne du commerçant. Le GTIN est un identifiant normalisé pour reconnaître un produit dans des échanges plus larges. Un code-barres, quant à lui, est un support imprimé ou numérique que le scanner lit : il peut porter un GTIN, mais l’identifiant et son apparence graphique ne sont pas la même chose.

GS1 distingue plusieurs formats de GTIN : le GTIN-12, aussi appelé UPC, est principalement utilisé en Amérique du Nord; le GTIN-13, aussi appelé EAN ou JAN, est surtout utilisé en Europe et dans le reste du monde; le GTIN-14 sert aux caisses et emballages; et le GTIN-8 convient aux articles de petite taille. L’ISBN identifie les livres. GS1 présente les formats et usages des GTIN.

GS1 US explique la distinction entre GTIN et SKU. Shopify indique également qu’une fiche produit peut contenir à la fois un SKU et un code-barres; selon la valeur et son usage, ce dernier peut correspondre à un GTIN, un UPC, un EAN, un ISBN ou un ASIN. Certains canaux de vente demandent un GTIN pour publier un produit : dans ce cas, un SKU interne n’est pas un substitut. La documentation Shopify décrit les champs d’une fiche produit.

Comment utiliser les SKU dans un petit commerce
- Établissez une règle de nommage et expliquez-la à toute l’équipe.
- Utilisez un code distinct pour chaque variante que vous gérez séparément.
- Vérifiez l’unicité des codes et testez les imports, exports et outils de caisse ou d’inventaire avant un déploiement général.
- Gardez le GTIN ou un autre identifiant standard dans son champ dédié lorsque votre canal de vente le demande.
- Si vous utilisez plusieurs emplacements, conservez un SKU par variante et suivez les quantités séparément par emplacement.
Les libellés de champs et les exigences des canaux peuvent changer. Pour les détails propres à une plateforme ou à un canal, vérifiez la documentation opérationnelle en vigueur au moment de la configuration.
