There is no independently verified current figure for Paul Biya’s net worth in the sources reviewed. The often-repeated $200 million amount comes from a 2014 ranking and appears on commercial estimate pages; neither source establishes it as an audited valuation of his assets minus liabilities.
Is Paul Biya’s net worth known?
No reliable, current accounting of Paul Biya’s assets and liabilities is established by the available sources. That means the exact answer to “how much is Paul Biya worth?” is not known from this evidence. A ranking or website estimate can show what figure is circulating, but it is not the same as a verified personal balance sheet.
Where does the $200 million estimate come from?
A 2014 ranking
A 2014 ranking document hosted on the Cameroon Presidency’s website lists Biya with an estimated net worth of $200 million. It is a ranking, not an asset declaration or audited valuation.
Commercial estimate pages
Commercial net-worth pages also repeat the $200 million figure, including Celebrity Net Worth. The page does not provide a verifiable valuation method in the material available, so its figure should be treated as an online estimate rather than confirmation.
The government’s response
Cameroon’s Ministry of Communication criticized the sourcing of widely circulated fortune rankings and objected to media claims attributing the ranking to Forbes. That is the Ministry’s stated position; it does not independently determine Biya’s net worth. The Ministry’s response is included in the same official-hosted document.
Why travel and hotel spending is not net worth
Separate reporting has estimated the costs associated with Biya’s private trips abroad, particularly stays in Geneva. Swissinfo, recounting OCCRP reporting in 2025, says that from Biya’s assumption of office in 1982 through 2018, he spent around four and a half years on private trips abroad and that the costs were at least CHF 150 million. It also reports an estimate of around CHF 40,000 per night for hotel stays (Swissinfo, 2025).
A separate 2019 Swissinfo account of OCCRP’s estimates put one InterContinental Geneva stay at roughly $40,000 per day, based on public hotel prices and entourage lists. It calculated about $65 million for 1,645 days of private trips since Biya took power, excluding food, entertainment, and private-plane rental (Swissinfo, 2019).
These figures concern estimated expenditure, not the value of Biya’s assets minus liabilities. They also do not establish who ultimately paid every cost. They cannot be added to or substituted for a net-worth estimate.
Does Cameroon’s asset-declaration law reveal his wealth?
Cameroon has a 2006 law concerning the declaration of assets and property, available through the Services of the Prime Minister. The existence of the law does not establish that Biya submitted a declaration or that any declaration is publicly accessible. The sources available here do not provide a public declaration or an asset-by-asset accounting that verifies a current net-worth figure.
