A March 2024 report relayed concerns from unnamed companies about Xbox’s performance in Europe and the value of supporting the platform. It did not identify the companies, provide sales figures, or show that publishers broadly planned to pull back. The report is an account of industry sentiment at that time—not evidence of Xbox’s current sales or publisher support in 2026.
What the report said
Insider Gaming published its story on March 26, 2024, with Mike Straw byline. The account was based on comments by Chris Dring, then head of GamesIndustry.biz, about conversations and impressions from the preceding week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC). Dring said he had heard concerns from two companies—one prominent and one less prominent—about Xbox’s performance in Europe. Read the Insider Gaming report.
As quoted in the report, Dring said on the GamesIndustry.biz Microcast: “The other thing I heard—I heard it from a very prominent company and one not so prominent—was Xbox’s performance in Europe is just flatlining.” Dring also relayed a comment from an unnamed major company questioning its decision to support Xbox after releasing a major game the previous year: “I don’t know why we bothered supporting it”.
What the claims do—and do not—establish
- Geography: The reported performance concern was about Europe. The report did not establish where the companies Dring referenced were based, or extend the claim to other regions.
- Who expressed concern: The companies and the speaker behind the quoted remark were not named. The statements are attributed to Dring’s account, not presented as direct, independently verified comments from identified publishers.
- How widespread it was: The account mentions concerns from two companies and one unnamed major company’s reported comment. It does not establish a general publisher consensus or a decision to stop supporting Xbox.
- Evidence of sales: The report gives no measured sales figures, survey results, or other numerical data. “Flatlining” is a qualitative description, not a quantified finding.
- Microsoft’s response: Insider Gaming said it had asked Microsoft for comment and had not received a response by publication. That is the status reported on March 26, 2024; it does not establish whether Microsoft responded later.
What readers can conclude in 2026
The report documents concerns attributed to industry conversations around GDC in March 2024. On its own, it cannot establish Xbox’s sales performance or the level of publisher support in 2026. A current conclusion would require newer evidence, ideally with a clear time period, geography, and method, such as named publisher statements or measured sales data.
