PV Sindhu ranked seventh in Forbes’ 2021 list of the world’s highest-paid female athletes, making it her second top-ten appearance after also placing seventh in 2018. Forbes’ estimates, reported by Scroll in January 2022, put her 2021 earnings at $7.2 million, with most attributed to income off the court.

Forbes estimated Sindhu’s total earnings for 2021 at $7.2 million, according to Scroll’s January 14, 2022 report. The estimate comprised $200,000 from on-court earnings and $7 million off court, principally from endorsements. Osaka led the 2021 ranking. Scroll also relayed Forbes’ observation that Osaka and Serena Williams accounted for virtually all of the increase in the group’s earnings; the statement describes that list’s period, not a general comparison of athletes’ incomes.
Why was it Sindhu’s second top-ten appearance?
Sindhu had also ranked seventh on Forbes’ 2018 list, with estimated earnings of $8.5 million, as reported by Scroll in 2022. That figure relates to a different ranking period; it should not be read as Sindhu’s 2021 income or as a directly comparable annual salary.

What did Sindhu say about the ranking?
After reaching the India Open 2022 semifinals, Sindhu told the Badminton World Federation: “I’m happy about that. Featuring me is a feel-good thing. Placing me with the top female athletes is definitely a good sign for me, it will give me a lot of confidence,” as quoted in Scroll’s January 14, 2022 report.
