The report attributes estimates of more than 9,000 affected individuals and more than $1.4 million in collective losses to a cybersecurity researcher’s review of financial records; it does not independently verify those figures or document a court or law-enforcement outcome.
How the reported printer-support scam worked
According to Candid Technology’s report, the operation began in November 2021. It allegedly drew people in with online advertisements offering printer support. People who entered personal details through a support-chat feature were then called by individuals posing as technicians.
The callers allegedly directed victims to install Zoho Assist, a remote-access application. The report says the operators then displayed fabricated computer errors and warnings to create pressure to buy support plans that were not needed.
What the report says the researcher found
Candid Technology attributes its account to a cybersecurity researcher using the handle @NanoBaiter. The report says the researcher used a virtual machine to reverse the remote connection and inspect the operators’ system. It describes access to a laptop, identity and salary documents, transaction recordings, AWS-hosted infrastructure and surveillance feeds. The article does not provide independent technical documentation for each of these reported findings.

How many people and how much money were reportedly involved?
Candid Technology says the researcher reviewed financial records indicating that more than 9,000 individuals lost more than $1.4 million collectively. Those are estimates attributed to the researcher’s review, not independently verified totals in the article. It does not publish the underlying records, explain the calculation or identify an independent auditor.
What happened after the alleged activity was identified?
The report says the researcher flagged the operators’ Google AdSense account, reported their websites to JivoChat and flagged their Zoho Assist account. It also says evidence was shared with law enforcement, including the FBI, and that the researcher asked Uttar Pradesh police to contact him for details.
These are reported notifications and referrals, not confirmation that an agency opened a case or made a finding. Candid Technology’s February 18, 2025 article, updated March 23, 2025, does not document arrests, charges, convictions or a final law-enforcement outcome.

What to take from the report
The reported pattern is a useful warning sign: an unsolicited or suspicious printer-support ad can lead from a chat form to a phone call, a request for remote access and pressure to pay for support. The allegations and loss estimates remain those reported by Candid Technology based on the researcher’s account; the article does not establish them as adjudicated findings.
