Tim Higgins’s iWar: Fortnite, Elon Musk, Spotify, WeChat, and Laying Siege to Apple’s Empire examines the disputes that developers and companies brought to regulators over Apple’s App Store rules and fees. The phrase “Apple tax” is shorthand for those contested charges and policies—not a formal legal finding. Paul Thurrott’s September 2025 coverage presents the book as a history of that conflict, not an update on its current legal status.

What does “Apple tax” mean in the book’s title?

Here, “Apple tax” refers to the App Store fees and related rules that developers and companies challenged. The dispute is about how Apple governs app distribution and payments on its platform, and what charges or restrictions follow from those rules. The phrase is an advocacy shorthand; it should not be read as a regulator’s or court’s conclusion.

Thurrott’s September 6, 2025 article quotes Spotify saying, “Apple is still proposing new fees that perpetuate the status quo—despite being told to stop its illegal conduct,” presenting it as Spotify’s position rather than a neutral adjudication or a current statement. Thurrott’s announcement of the book does not, by itself, establish the legal status of the conduct or fees described.

What disputes does iWar cover?

The book’s full title is iWar: Fortnite, Elon Musk, Spotify, WeChat, and Laying Siege to Apple’s Empire. As summarized in Thurrott’s announcement and review, it follows a range of overlapping disputes involving developers, competitors, and regulators. Spotify and Epic Games are prominent examples in the broader challenge to Apple’s App Store rules and fees; the account also addresses other actors and, to a lesser degree, Google.

Those episodes should not be collapsed into one case. The parties, policies at issue, authorities, jurisdictions, and outcomes differ. The 2025 coverage describes the book’s narrative but does not provide a comprehensive chronology or establish current case status across those disputes.

What kind of account is it?

In his September 22, 2025 review, Thurrott describes iWar as a mostly chronological account of the overlapping efforts by developers, competitors, and regulators. His assessment is that readers who had followed the antitrust cases would recognize much of the story, that the book offered him no new revelations, and that the broader conflict was still unfolding when the book ended. Those are the reviewer’s judgments about the book, not findings about the merits of any case. Read Thurrott’s review of iWar.

The review also reports that the book recounts Apple determining the App Store’s 2018 operating margin to be 74.9 percent. That figure is attributed here to the book as relayed by Thurrott; the underlying Apple record is not established by the cited coverage, so it should not be treated as independently verified in this account.

When was the book released, and what formats were reported?

Thurrott’s September 6, 2025 article said iWar was scheduled for September 16 in Kindle, Audible, and hardcover formats. His September 22 review described it as available in those formats at that time. Those reports do not establish present-day inventory, pricing, or edition details.
