How McDonald’s Is Reinventing Itself for India

McDonald’s adaptation in India spans locally relevant menus, value, ordering access, restaurant experience and sourcing. Regional company claims and global targets offer context, but do not establish a nationwide change in customer sentiment.

McDonald’s India is trying to stay relevant through locally tailored menus, value, digital and delivery access, restaurant improvements and stronger local supply chains. In West and South India, operator Westlife Foodworld describes those as current priorities; McDonald’s global NEXT strategy, announced in September 2026, offers a broader framework but leaves local execution to each market. The available evidence does not show that Indian customers have become less fond of the brand, or that every global initiative is already active in India.

India’s reinvention has been underway for years

McDonald’s adaptation in India is not a sudden pivot. The company’s official history records the vegetarian Veg Maharaja Mac in 2016 and digitally enabled Experience of the Future restaurants in 2017. Its India story also includes formats such as McCafé, breakfast and delivery, though the company’s page does not provide reliable current counts for those offerings.

That history matters: localization is part of how a global restaurant brand operates in a market with distinct tastes and expectations, not evidence by itself of a recent crisis in customer affection.

What the regional operators say they are changing

McDonald’s restaurants in India are operated through regional businesses, so the available company figures should be read by region rather than combined into a national scorecard.

West and South India: relevance, value and access

Westlife Foodworld’s FY 2024–25 annual report describes priorities spanning local menu relevance, brand trust, value, omnichannel access and expansion. It reports that around 99% of menu ingredients in its West and South India business come from within India. This is the operator’s reported figure for its regional business, not a comparable national statistic.

In practical terms, the priorities point to an effort to make the offer fit local preferences and budgets while giving customers more ways to order. The annual report sets out company priorities; it does not, on its own, establish that these efforts have improved customer sentiment or business performance.

North and East India: local sourcing and menu activity

In a year-end 2025 post, McDonald’s India North and East said 99% of ingredients were sourced locally from more than 4,000 Indian farmers and suppliers. That is a separate regional company-reported figure. It should not be added to Westlife’s number or presented as a single India-wide sourcing rate.

Why sourcing is part of the brand strategy

Local sourcing can connect menu operations to Indian suppliers and farmers, while a dependable supply chain supports consistency across restaurants. McDonald’s India’s Farm to Fork page describes the company’s cold-chain and traceability history. That is the company’s account of its system, not independent verification of current performance.

The two regional sourcing claims offer useful evidence of how operators describe their supply networks, but they do not use a harmonized measure that allows a direct comparison between North/East and West/South India.

What McDonald’s global NEXT strategy adds

In September 2026, McDonald’s Corporation announced NEXT, a global strategy organized around menu, consumer relationships, restaurants and people. The company emphasizes taste and execution, more personalized connections, simpler and more modern operations, and hospitality. It says local markets will determine how the strategy is carried out, so NEXT is context for India’s direction—not proof that every initiative has already been introduced there.

The announcement frames the effort against a large global customer base: McDonald’s said it serves more than 70 million customers daily and has nearly 220 million 90-day active loyalty members across 70 loyalty markets. Those figures describe the global company, not India.

McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said in the global announcement: “McDonald’s has the unmatched scale, customer insights, brand loyalty, and operational capabilities to not only adapt to the next wave of change in our industry, but to turn it into an advantage.” The comment describes the company’s global rationale, rather than a specific assessment of Indian customers.

Global targets are not India results

McDonald’s also set global targets for 2030: gaining 1.5 percentage points of market share in chicken and beverages, and achieving approximately 250 basis points of gross restaurant-level efficiency gains. These are prospective global strategy targets, not completed results or India-specific commitments.

Does this mean Indian customers stopped loving McDonald’s?

That conclusion is not established by the available evidence. The sources describe company priorities, historical adaptations, regional sourcing figures and a global strategy. They do not provide a representative Indian customer survey showing that affection for McDonald’s has fallen, nor a comparable regional scorecard for customer sentiment, same-store sales, menu performance or execution of NEXT.

The more supportable reading is that McDonald’s is continuing to adapt its India business: local menus and value, convenient ordering, restaurant experience and supply capabilities are all part of the stated agenda. Whether those moves make customers feel as positively about the brand as they once did remains an open question, not a demonstrated outcome.
