Keventers brought a legacy dairy name into modern India with a simple mix: familiar milkshakes, new flavours and distinctive glass bottles made for sharing. The bottle and retro styling connected the revived brand to its past, while social media helped make the product feel current. Its story is a case study in how nostalgia can support a contemporary retail identity—not proof that legacy alone guarantees lasting success.
How Keventers went from dairy business to milkshake brand
Keventers’ roots in India reach back well before its modern milkshake outlets. Quartz traces the story to Swedish dairy technologist Edward Keventer, who arrived in India in 1889 and took over Aligarh Dairy in 1894. The Delhi dairy farm associated with the Keventers name was established in 1925, and industrialist Ram Krishna Dalmia acquired the business in 1940. The company became known for milk, butter, cheese and ice cream; Quartz also credits it with popularising cassata ice cream in India. Quartz’s 2022 account provides the historical timeline.
The main Chanakyapuri plant closed in the 1970s after its land became part of a diplomatic enclave. Some distributors continued to run outlets, but the brand was no longer formally managed by the Dalmias. The current revival began much later: Agastya Dalmia, Ram Krishna Dalmia’s grandson, and his friend Aman Arora tried an outlet in Pitampura in 2014. It closed within a year. They later joined restaurateur Sohrab Sitaram, and the team relaunched Keventers at Select CityWalk in 2015.
Why the revival appealed to younger customers
A milkshake alone was not a point of difference in a market where the drink was already familiar. The revival team paired classic flavours with newer combinations, then made the glass bottle, retro imagery and store interiors part of the experience. Customers began sharing bottle photos on Instagram, turning packaging into a recognisable feature of the brand rather than a container customers simply discarded.

In a July 2022 interview with Quartz, then CEO and co-founder Sohrab Sitaram explained the target: “We knew that if we need scale, we need to appeal to the younger generation and appeal to modern India.” The strategy did not rely on nostalgia alone. Legacy imagery gave customers a connection to the brand’s past, while new combinations and social sharing made the revived format feel contemporary.
A 2021 Mint report described Keventers as building a retail identity around milkshakes and the glass bottle, and said the company had introduced smoothies during the pandemic period. That is a dated account of the menu, not confirmation of what is available today.

What the brand sells—and what the dated figures show
Keventers’ official homepage lists milkshakes, thick shakes, iced beverages, ice cream packs, sundaes and hot chocolate. The range shows that the brand’s present-day public-facing menu extends beyond its signature milkshake format. The official homepage lists these categories; it does not establish that every item is available at every outlet.

Quartz reported in 2022 that franchising was a route to expansion. Under the model described then, Keventers supplied recipes, syrups, bottles and store design, while franchisees procured milk and ice cream locally. This helps explain how a distinctive store and product experience could be extended beyond company-run locations, but the report is not confirmation of current franchise terms.
