The headline comes from a MoneyRadar video published July 18, 2025. The allegations it raises deserve scrutiny, but the reporting reviewed for this article does not independently prove hidden debt, sales inflation, improper subsidies, or other misconduct. BYD’s reported growth figures are not proof of wrongdoing—or proof that every allegation is false.
What do BYD’s reported results show?
BYD’s investor-relations page reports revenue of RMB 777.102 billion and net profit attributable to shareholders of RMB 40.254 billion for 2024. Those are company-reported financial results; they show substantial reported revenue and profit, but do not by themselves settle questions about the quality of the accounts, debt, cash flow, or business practices.
Xinhua, in coverage hosted by Shenzhen Government Online in 2025, reported that BYD sold 4.272 million new energy vehicles in 2024, up 41% year over year, citing the company’s annual report. BYD’s January 1, 2025 production and sales announcement says volume data are unaudited and may be adjusted or finally confirmed. Treat the sales figure as a reported volume, not as an independent audit of every transaction.
Which claims are allegations rather than established findings?
A News Wheel article published September 4, 2025 repeats allegations attributed to a January 2025 GMT Research report and also discusses subsidies, recalls, “0 km used cars,” sales practices, and labor conditions. The News Wheel account is secondary reporting, not the original GMT Research report or a regulator’s finding. The primary documents needed to verify those claims were not available among the sources reviewed.

What evidence would justify a stronger conclusion?
A fraud or “scam” verdict requires more than rapid growth, a secondary article, or an allegation repeated in a video description. For the claims above, the most useful evidence would be:
- The original GMT Research analysis, including its definitions, calculations, and supporting documents.
- BYD’s audited annual report and notes covering trade payables, financing, cash, and grants, considered together rather than in isolation.
- Regulator recall notices identifying affected models, defects, and remedies.
- Official labor or sales-practice investigation records.
For a meaningful comparison with other automakers, figures would also need consistent periods and definitions: audited revenue and profit; cash, borrowings, and supplier payables; deliveries versus registrations and inventory; and recall counts considered against fleet size and severity. The sources cited here do not provide enough comparable evidence to rank BYD against competitors on those measures.

So, is BYD the biggest scam in automotive history?
That conclusion is not supported by the available evidence. BYD’s company-reported financial results and reported vehicle sales establish scale and growth, not whether allegations are true. Conversely, those results do not disprove allegations. The specific claims need to be tested against original company disclosures and primary regulator or investigation records before they can fairly be treated as proven.
